So Nice

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Our department manager said today of another department, "They know you'll work with them on it, because you're so NICE! And I'm just not."

I don't think I'm overly nice in the workplace. As a matter-of-fact, I have spent the past three weeks pretty much slamming people on the head with a giant rubber mallet to get them to stop calling me when they have trouble with one of my studies' websites.

Another company runs the website. There is a link on the login page to customer service for that company, to report any problems. It's not only appropriate to contact them directly as we pay them to take care of that stuff, it's also much faster than waiting for me to have ten minutes to get into the thing and monkey around with it myself.

Jen did it when she had the study, because that girl... is nice. Who was the first to congratulate me on the nasty email I sent, setting everyone straight on the whole issue? Jen!

I say click the gosh darn customer service link, for cripe's sake. I've said it to research assistants, project managers and even... the CLIENT a few days ago. See? I'm not that nice.

Okay. The email wasn't that nasty. But it was definitely strongly worded.

What do your coworkers think of you that might surprise you? Hmm!

Happy Memorial Day

Monday, May 27, 2013

Remembering the reason for the holiday. I hope everyone has a wonderful day with family and friends!

Well, as I've been saying to everyone... After the absolute devastation in Oklahoma this week, I hate to whine about my power being out for six hours, but OMG it was bloody hot on Saturday afternoon with no AC. We also lost a fridge full of food we'd just bought at HEB, and most importantly, 2.5 pounds of beautiful Shiner-Bock-marinade carne asada. Dude. That stuff was going to rock. I even got Central Market tortillas for it.

Patrick's Saturday Six

1. What was your biggest accomplishment in school?
I graduated with the 9th highest GPA in a class of 860, tied with one of my lifelong best friends, Kimberly, and just behind the two tied valedictorians - Kathy (who I barely knew then, but became close friends with at A&M and currently hang out with every weekend) and Danny- and six tied salutatorians.

2. Have you ever won a ribbon for any event or competition, and if so, what was it for?
I won ribbons for mostly academic things like Science Fair, poetry I wrote for the Literary Magazine, a paper I wrote for Government for a Social Studies competition (of which I am still most proud, because Social Studies was my least favorite subject), etc. I won several track and field day ribbons in various events. As soon as they add hula-hoop rolling to the Olympics, I am so in.

3. Have you ever been awarded a trophy for anything, and if so, what was it for?
I don't remember personally winning any trophies before the Foundation award I received earlier this year. My seventh grade basketball team won a trophy and the choirs I was in won a bunch as well.

4. What award do you feel you’d be the last person to ever win?
Most Organized Shoes

5. Do you think it’s truly more important just to be nominated for an award, or more important to win one?
Of COURSE it's more important to win one. It's a huge honor to be nominated as well.

6. A question from a decades-long grade school debate: Do you believe that everyone who participates in a competition should win something just for participating?
Absolutely not. I like certificates of participation or a patch or something, but not anything that even remotely denotes winning, like a ribbon or a trophy. Please. "Winning" for participating is just silly and vastly reduces the significance of actually excelling at something.

... and they NEVER had a fight.

(Old radio joke. You had to be there.)

Happy anniversary, dear husband o' mine!!

I have to say it here for the interwebs, if he is to see it, because the guy is never on Facebook. The in-laws are here this weekend, so we have a multi-anniversary/birthday family hoo-ha tonight, but he and I will overnight somewhere in the next few weeks to celebrate. I am thrilled with the idea of getting out of town for a little R&R, with the daily craziness of our new jobs.

Yesterday morning, Lauren and I were watching Dead Files on The Travel Channel. They were talking about a murderer who was hanged in the late 1800s in Wyoming. When they briefly showed the newspaper clipping, I noticed that the guy's name was... Will Stretch.

That was worth an entire day on ongoing giggles!

Will. Stretch.

Oh man.

Children of the 70s, this is for you:

Aaaallllriiight!

Saturday 9: Battle Hymn of the Republic

Memorial Day was introduced to honor the men and women who died while serving the in the United States Armed Forces. We want to make sure that message is not forgotten this weekend.

1) This recording was made live at St. Patrick's Cathedral, during Sen. Robert Kennedy's funeral. While both of Bobby's older brothers were decorated war heroes, he served too -- enlisting in the Navy in 1943. Are you a veteran? Are there veterans in your family? (We are grateful and want to hear about it.)
My grandpa and my uncle Brian are both retired Army colonels.

2) Memorial Day also kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?
watermelon

3) Name a scent that reminds you of someone special in your life.
Cookies baking reminds me of my mom. She was an amazing baker and cook.

4) When was the last time you had your hair cut or trimmed?
February. It's too long at the moment.

5) Crazy Sam runs on Dunkin'. Are you loyal to a particular brand of coffee?
Nah. If I like it, I drink it.

6) If money were no object, what home improvement would you like to make this summer?
If money were no object, I would put a breathtaking pool in the backyard and hire people to take care of 100% of the maintenance.

7) What was the last thing you bought purely for your own enjoyment?
While Kathy and I were out shopping last weekend, I happened upon a carved stone owl to go with my new patio decor. So cute!

Hoo.

8) When was the last time you rode a bike?
A couple of years ago. I'd have to clean the inch of dust off my bike to ride it today,

9) Sam worries that many of her song selections reflect her decidedly Baby Boomer sensibilities. Is there a song or a performer that you'd like to see featured in a Saturday 9 this summer?
Maroon 5

Gah. So much more to say these days, but so much less time to say it.

Just wanted to note that a year after my first-ever "questionable" mammogram (yes, including the one in 1996 when I had a 1cm palpable malignant tumor) and followup tests showing everything was probably fine... this year's mammogram was clear. Whee!

Have a wonderful day, people!

Is it Just Madness...?

Sunday, May 19, 2013

Why yes. I AM late to the party on this one! Just heard Muse's "Madness" for the first time this week. Awesome.

...is this real love,
Or is it just madness keeping us afloat?

Saturday 9: Greased Lightnin'

1) Greased Lightnin' was the name of a car. Have you ever given your car a name?

Nope.

2) Could your vehicle use a trip to the car wash this weekend?
Yes, but I did clean the inside really well last weekend!

3) This song is from the soundtrack of the movie Grease, the biggest money-making movie musical of all time. Have you ever seen it?
About a million times!

4) John Travolta's astrological sign is Aquarius. What's yours?

Aries

5) In addition to being John Travolta's birthplace, Englewood, New Jersey, played a significant role in telecommunications history. In 1951, Englewood's mayor made the first-ever direct dial long-distance call in the United States. Now it's your turn. Tell us something about your birthplace.

Heidelberg is the home of Universität Heidelberg, the oldest university in Germany, founded in 1386.

6) Travolta is an excellent dancer. How are you on the dance floor?

pretty good :)

7) Grease is an upbeat musical about the students of Rydell High. Another Travolta movie is Carrie, which features the worst prom night imaginable. Grease or Carrie -- which is closer to your high school experience?
Grease!

8) What was your best subject in high school? What was your worst?

Best- math. Worst- history.

9) Sam made good use of the bus ride to school, using that time to complete her homework. What do you remember about getting to or from school?
My sophomore year, John drove Doug, Shane and I. My junior and senior years, I sometimes took my mom to work and drove her car. Kimberly drove her mom's car sometimes, but she wasn't allowed to have any passengers. Doug took us for a while. The vast majority of my high school days, though, I rode the bus and sat with Kimberly!

Howdy!

You know what I get at work that I don't get at home?

Heh. No.

Instant scalding hot water from the tap! OMG. So nice. It's just like a hotel.

Wow, I'm sort of heading down a path here.

Anyhoo... Steph has her eye on a dude from the other building, who comes by our table outside every day at lunch. He is definitely a cutie. She thought he might be an ex she dated back in 1993 (while she and I were actually working together, in a previous lifetime). After she asked his name yesterday and said he reminded her of someone, and they figured out it wasn't him, he smiled and said, "Well, I hope he was someone nice."

She said yes. He walked off.

Almost inaudibly, but all at the same time, our whole table of girls (and Jack) went, "Awwwwww!!"  Too funny!

(By the parentheses, I mean Jack was there. He didn't participate in the "awww!" He more... sort of... rolled his eyes.)

Remember how I said I would end up with two patio couches, after this Target fiasco?

Hello, Couch #2.

Not happy at all.

I missed The Voice last night and, along with it, my twice-a-week Adam Levine fix. *tear* Blake is hilarious. We just love Shakira on there this season, but Usher seems only semi-engaged. Sometimes when they get to Usher for comment, he is like that kid in class who wasn't paying attention, who comes up with some generic comment to answer the teacher's question.

Judith is my favorite singer this season. I like the Swon Brothers, too. Garrett just isn't my cup of tea, but I tell you what- he is VASTLY improved from the beginning of the show. He's really great now and was all over the map at the early stages. Awesome!

Can You Please Repeat That?

Sunday, May 12, 2013

In nothing less than a monumental clusterf comedy of errors, Target managed to make the biggest mess out of literally no mess at all.

We ordered patio furniture from them online. Three of the pieces- the sofa and a set of 2 club chairs- required delivery by truck. The delivery company called and set up a delivery time. The furniture didn't show up, so I called that afternoon. The delivery company said that they never received the sofa, only the chairs. (From movie-going experiences, this is where JeffC sees what's about to happen, and none of you see it yet. I certainly didn't.)

They asked if I wanted the chairs delivered, and then wait on delivery of the sofa, or to just hold the chairs until the sofa showed up. I told them to wait. After a week I called them again and they said they still haven't received the sofa. So I called Target. I spent an hour on the phone with customer service with someone I could barely understand.  Companies shouldn't hire people with heavy accents to do customer service. There are plenty of places for people who don't communicate well in the language of the country they are dealing with to work- customer service is not one of those. Nothing frustrates customers who are already having an issue with you more than a struggle to communicate.

Same applies, when US companies deal with customers overseas. Hire people fluent in those languages (with some semblance of the proper accent) to help those people.

So over about an hour, she gave me three separate stories of what seemed to be happening with the silly missing sofa before settling on "lost in transit." They would figure out where it was and call me within 48 hours.

No call.

So I called them and had another long chat with someone who had an ever thicker accent than the first. She was getting more frustrated with my constant "I'm sorry. Can you please repeat that?" than I was. Gah. Stop the madness.

After my insistence that they either send me a different sofa or cancel the entire order, she eventually passed me to a supervisor (who had no accent at all- thankyaJesus). The supervisor figured out what to do. It would be a long, confusing process. She would refund my original sofa as a "return," but with no actual return. Then I would order a new sofa, which they would deliver while they found the missing one.

Another sofa was on its way, to arrive in 10 days. The delivery company would have to deliver my chairs immediately though, because they had reached the limit of storage in their warehouse. (Seriously?) I would have to take 2 deliveries.

This is where Jeff realizes what's probably happened is that they think the two boxes are the 2 chairs, when they have actually been the chairs and the sofa all along.

Forty-eight hours later, the delivery showed up on my doorstep, unannounced. It was...

the chairs AND the sofa.

*forehead smack*

Mind you, the boxes are completely different sizes and are clearly labeled "2 Club Chairs" and "3-Seat Sofa."

Now I have the missing sofa they say I've returned and another sofa on the way.

I tried to contact Target via email (to avoid the whole communication issue), both on their website and by the tons of emails I had received through the process. There isn't an email on the site for order inquiries. Not one. The emails I received came from addresses to which I couldn't reply.

There isn't a chat feature on their website either. Your only choice is to call. Let me just say, email or chat would solve a lot of issues and be far cheaper for them in the long run.

LUCKILY, the supervisor who had arranged all the weird return/refund stuff emailed me, from an address I could email her back. She said the delivery company reported that they had delivered the original sofa and 2 chairs that day. I replied yes.

I'm pretty sure another sofa will show up here on Monday.

Mama Told Me Not to Come

Saturday, May 11, 2013

At happy hour Thursday night-

Crystal: Have another drink!
Me: No, I need to drive home, so I'm switching to water.
Crystal (having her third): Nooooo. Have another. I have my car!
Me: Like I would let YOU drive me home.
Crystal: No, we can sleep in it!

Ahahaha! Our department had the highest attendance. We need the most alcohol. Just saying.

Saturday 9: Mama Told Me (Not to Come)

1) This song is about a lad who didn't take his mother's advice and attended the wild party anyway (hear it here). When you were young, did your parents approve of your friends? If you're a parent yourself, how have you handled it when your kids start hanging around with friends you're not crazy about?
My parents loved my friends. There were occasional, more peripheral ones that weren't Mom's faves. She would always make a brief statement at some relevant moment, and then never say another word. She was always right about people, and I would eventually figure that out. Almost all of Lauren's friends have been awesome as well. If  I don't find someone awesome, I try to say something once and leave it, like my mom did with me.

2) A 2010 poll named Marge Simpson of The Simpsons the most popular TV mom of all time. Who is your favorite TV (or movie) mother?
Claire on Modern Family

3) Crazy Sam's mother is a big fan of The National Enquirer. As she likes to say, "They were right about John Edwards!" Do you read the tabloids? Cast a guilty glance at them when you're in line at the store? Or ignore them altogether?
Ignore them. I'm not completely immune though- I watch TMZ faithfully. Those guys are SO funny.

4) Mother Winters always gave Sam peppermint tea to calm her stomach. Do you have any tried-and-true home remedies to share?
Vinegar-soaked dishtowels on a sunburn to take the pain away

5) Thinking of guts ... When making decisions, do you tend to consider all the options carefully or do you "go with your gut"?
I consider options. In the end, I usually go with my gut though, even if the pros and cons aren't balanced in that direction.

6) Spring is here! Do you have a green thumb?
Nope

7) Have you put away your winter clothes yet?
Not yet. It's been in the 40s at night recently.

8) After you lather and rinse, do you repeat?
rarely

9) To celebrate Mother's Day, Sam is giving away Hershey bars. Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate or milk chocolate with almonds?

Classic. I like almonds and chocolate, but in a Hershey bar, it wrecks the whole "rectangle pieces" concept.

Trouble, Trouble, Trouble

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Hiiiiii-dee-ho, friends.

My all-time fave Walk Off the Earth cover is still "Trouble," but their new Madonna cover is pretty awesome! The video- so cute. Sarah even dances 80s style. (She's also totally preggers. TOTALLY.)

Some boys romance, some boys slow dance... That's alright with me...

Speaking of cash... If you get wound up when someone starts talking about the banks and how they screwed the government out of billions of bailout money (i.e. YOUR money), paying bonuses to the very people who got them into the mess they were in, because "we have to pay them bonuses or they'll leave," when they should be kicked out the door because they were the very screw-ups who caused it...

or

when the subject of oil companies comes up and how prices go up at the drop of a hat, but come down slow as molasses, and the Exxons and Shells of the world post record profits on the backs of people who are cutting their home budgets to afford groceries every week...

I have a solution.

It requires you sell out, but it's a great fix. Are you up for it?

KathyL suggests investing in stock in oil companies and banks. She is no longer irritated when the news or a coworker or a buddy talks about it. She just thinks about her retirement fund growing.

Nice.

So, yes. Kathy is owned by The Man. But she is blissful and relaxed.

Or maybe it's the wine.

Here again is Walk Off the Earth's best cover (ft. KRNFX), in case you haven't heard it. Totally rocks all over the original.

You never loved me
Or her
Or anyone
Or anything
yeah

Fredericksburg Saturday

Sunday, May 5, 2013

Kathy and I jaunted out to Fredericksburg yesterday and I bought the wrong pecan honey butter. Wah. I wanted to buy the one I tasted at Wildseed Farms, but decided against it at the last minute. Then I saw some at several stores in town, and finally bought some without tasting. The one I got will send you straight into a diabetic coma. Blech. Guess I'll have to go back and get the right one. Limited Edition Pecan Honey Butter is the best. Don't waste your time with any others. It seems to be available at Austinuts, but it's more fun to trek back across the Hill Country to get it.

Best part of the day-- we got ÜBER-PRIMO seats, the last table open outside, right at the sidewalk on the front patio at the Silver Creek Saloon! We could have hung out all day there, people watching and eating schnitzel, but there was a full day of shopping to do.

Saturday Nine n' Stuff

Saturday, May 4, 2013

Lauren has had all-over body pain, like fibromyalgia, to varying degrees since her junior year of high school. She's been in a particularly bad episode for a few weeks now. Her first experience with a pain specialist yesterday was horrific. After five minutes, he said she was young and would probably get over whatever it is within a few months, and sent her off with some muscle relaxants.

That garbage after making her wait an hour-and-a-half past her appointment time, which is absurd, and a major pet peeve of mine with doctors. I don't put up with it at all, except from my OB/GYN, who has an excuse to run late. (With her, I just make early appointments and hope for the best.) Otherwise, if a doc makes me wait more than about 15 minutes past my appointment time, I find another doctor who values my time as much as I value his. I have truly exceptional doctors, and even THEY manage to keep their schedules 95% of the time. GRR. Get over yourselves, late doctors.

Anyhoo... she's going back to our family doc next week, to see if he can either figure out her meds to get her back on track or give her a referral to a less quacky pain specialist. There were hardly any good reviews of pain specialists in Austin on Angie's List. Patsy gave me her guy's name, who she raved about. He's in Cedar Park, but if he's good, it would definitely be worth the drive.

Saturday 9: Tunnel of Love

1) Do you enjoy amusement park rides?
Yes! In the last ten years or so, I have gotten to where I don't like being too strapped into rides- like the roller coasters that hold you in from the top with a big rigged-up contraption and strap you in from the bottom with a seat belt and a bar, so you can't move a finger during the ride. The coaster is awesome, but being trapped in a seat like that gives me the heebie-jeebies.

2) In this song, Bruce likens romance to riding through the tunnel of love. The Red Hot Chili Peppers sing about a "Love Rollercoaster." What amusement park ride reminds you of your relationships?
The swing rides, like the Gunslinger (for you Six Flags over Texas fans out there). You start on the ground, then everything goes up into the clouds and floats along nicely for a while, then it goes a bit wonky and there are ups and downs, then everything straightens out again. But most of all, there's a lot of swinging.

Just kidding! (Jeff's like, YAY!)

3) Bruce's nickname is The Boss. Who was your best boss? What made him/her a good supervisor?

My best boss was Mike at A&M. He was the nicest person I think I've ever met. His feathers never got ruffled about anything. He was the type of boss who let you run with your ideas and effectively managed projects while giving you control over your own responsibilities.

4) Bruce's father was a bus driver and his mother was a legal secretary. What professions did/do your parents work in?
My dad was a visual simulation engineer. He originally worked in space flight simulation for NASA, and later in other simulation applications like surgery, armed forces vehicles and aircraft, police and EMS driving, etc.

My mom was a secretary with the Military Intelligence Corps in Europe when she was 19-22. (Aww. I can tell you that, but now I have to kill you.) Then she was a stay-at-home mom until I went to middle school. She did typesetting for a family-owned print shop for a few years. Then she started as a secretary at IBM, and worked her way into mapping technologies and location analytics.

5) Bruce met his wife Patti at a bar in Asbury Park. Do you believe you can pick up lasting love in a bar?
Certainly. You can also pick up regretful one-night stands and a plethora of diseases, so know the difference.

6) Springsteen was unable to work for years because he was embroiled in a lawsuit with his management company. Have you ever been sued, or sued someone else?
Nope

7) Bruce won an Oscar for writing the title song for the Tom Hanks movie Philadelphia. Do you have a favorite Tom Hanks movie?
Big

8) Bruce's official Twitter account (@springsteen) has more than 389,000 followers. Do you tweet? If so, how many people follow you?
I did several years ago, for about 3-4 months. I had like 10 followers. I had no idea what I was doing and didn't post very much.

9) Bruce's drummer, Mighty Max Weinberg, led the band on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. Who do you think is funnier -- Conan or Jay Leno? Or are you looking forward to Jimmy Fallon?
I don't like Conan or Jay. Conan can be funny, but he constantly interrupts guests to make jokes or talk about himself, which is annoying. Jay comes from a pissy place in his comedy. He has some good lines of course, but he just seems a bit wrapped around the axle. Love Jimmy Fallon, who is the funniest of those three, but I have to say, I've been a dedicated David Letterman fan since college. He's got my vote all the way.

Almost Friday

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Because my radio station has a playlist of about 15 songs (good GAWD, don't even get me started), I listen to "Some Nights" on the way to work every single day.  A few weeks ago, I said that the line "Man you wouldn't believe the most amazing things that can come from some terrible nights" would be better as "...some terrible lies?" Well, a song called "Some Nights" is probably better served by the line "...some terrible nights."

But I still like the "lies" line better, were it a standalone issue.

These are the things that keep me up at night, folks.

I am home early this afternoon after a checkup at the DDS, and I can report a brand spankin' new experience after forty-some-odd years of visiting the dentist: The tooth polisher tickled. I mean a LOT. (Yes, she was using it on my teeth.)

I almost had to make her stop. It was completely ridiculous.

I wanna do one serious quote as an aside from the "New Girl" Quote of the Week in the ol' sidebar >>

On the "Virgins" episode last night, Nick's dad said, "I just want to make sure you don't miss out on the things in life that happen when you're not thinking. Because believe you me, those are the best things."

Love that. So true!
