Stadium Reseating Aftermath

Friday, August 30, 2013

When you buy season college football tickets, as long as you continue buying them, you are guaranteed (not technically, but it is heavily implied and occurs virtually without exception) that same level of seating and that number of seats, as long you want them and want to pay whatever the going rate is the next year. We and everyone we know always get the same exact seats, as a matter-of-fact. Kathy's parents have had theirs since the 80's. Same seats. Same neighbors. Angel's family has had the same experience with their Florida Gator tix. Mary Faye and her family have had the same t.u. baseball tix forever.

Of course, if they reduce the number of season ticket seats, like they did last year in our south end zone, then ticket holders in those areas are out of luck. (That was a sad thing!)

But... say... you... I dunno... ADD 20,000 seats to your stadium. You announce that everyone is being re-seated. Everyone runs around freaking out, but I think it's fine. We won't have our same seats, but I assume we at least get 4 seats at our level. We even seriously consider upgrading if we can.

Each ticket holder was assigned a time and date, in order of points based on their years as a season ticket holder and the level of seating they have had over those years, to log in and commit to the number and level of 2015 tickets they wanted. No specific seats were assigned. Totally fair.

Here's the problem:

They allowed people to claim as many seats as they wanted, up to a max of some number (like 12) depending on the section they selected. So people who currently have 2 seats could commit to 12 seats, sucking up everyone else's spots. I'm not sure when it turned upside down, but at some tipping point in the process over the month, people started having to take tickets in sections below their current level. All the ones after them had to take tickets at a lower level than they've had, until they sold the last seat before hundreds (? thousands?) of current season ticket holders even had a chance to commit.

Here's the fair way they could have done it (© 2013 Jeff):

Round 1, each season ticket holder could have chosen whatever seat section they wanted, but only up to a max of the number of seats they currently hold. After round 1, every season ticket holder would have a seat.

Round 2, let everyone claim additional tix up to the max number per section, in the same priority order as before. Most of us wouldn't have been able to get additional seats, but at least we would have seats.

Now... toss into the mix the following abuse of the system: Many people committed to the maximum number of seats with absolutely no intention of using all of them. They are "holding those seats in case friends might want to buy them." They'll just keep the ones they need and not take the extras.

Lovely.

The only money you had to pay now was the first installment of a special fee per ticket. You signed a statement that you commit to paying the special fee. The punishment for backing out? You lose your tickets. That should mean ALL the tickets. If they let people keep some tix and cancel others, that will really tick off the people who didn't get tickets at all because of them.

And now A&M will have to sell those seats all over again. What a mess!

Oh well. Like someone said online, you can buy one heck of an 80-90" TV with the money you would have spent on season tix.

Cannot WAIT to be at the Rice game tomorrow!! Gig 'em Ags!!

She's Really Pretty Though

Thursday, August 29, 2013

At lunch today with the gals, we talked about someone we know, who is frustrating to work with, because she never seems to understand or have answers for any questions she is asked, never is on top of her schedule, etc. Just not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

"She's really pretty though!" Jennifer says.

I told her she sounded like Paula Abdul on American Idol. "Mary, you look so pretty tonight!" Your song sucked donkey balls! But you look cute. So there's that.

Later, Jen was talking about how much she hates math. She finds it difficult and had the worst time with it during college.

When we got back to the office, Jen and I had a meeting. At the end of the meeting...

Stace (to Jack): ...So we'll just do some math on the back end to address that issue.
Jack: Right.
Jen (under her breath, to me): Math.
Stace: What?
Me: Oh, we were just talking at lunch about how much Jen hates math.
Stace: Aww. She's so pretty though!

Bwahaha! Ohmigosh, that was hysterical. We were dying!

2015 Aggie Season Tix

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Well, this morning at 9 was our designated time to buy our 2015 A&M football season tickets. It's the third to last day, and it was... a disaster.

The only tickets remaining in the entire stadium this morning were about 70% of the north end zone third deck and 20% of the south end zone third deck.

That's. It.

For the entire place.

Many of the season ticket holders ahead of us must have purchased more tickets than they had before, especially considering the additional seating. We were thinking people might actually reduce their number of tix, because of the cost increase. I doubt there will be one seat left past tomorrow morning, if that.

Excellent for the football program! Absolutely suckeriffic for us. We actually spent a whole evening last month deciding if we wanted to upgrade to better seats, move sections, etc. It never occurred to us that we wouldn't be able to at least keep our current level of seating. Not even once.

I'm not a seat snob at Kyle Field. I'll sit anywhere to watch them play. Sitting on the third deck on the end zones just makes me super dizzy. It's very steep and uber-high.

We thought about taking those seats for about 5 seconds, but it just wouldn't work for us. Then the shock set in. We get to keep our tickets through next year. After that, we'll have to pick a game or two and just get tix on the resale market.

Sooooo disappointed. :(

VMAs (Super)Brief Roundup

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

VMAs were interesting. I'm no prude, but Miley's over-the-top display was straight-up gross. We muted Kanye's performance, so I'm not sure what he did. Overall though, it was a great night of music.

Things I learned watching the #VMAs2013: There's nothing you can do with a foam finger that you can't air on MTV.

-James Van Der Beek

Justin F'in Timberlake. Holy wow. He did a mini-concert, eh? SO fantastic. Bravo to him for giving NSYNC fans the closure they always wanted and never got. If only someone could have turned up Chasez's mic before the last ten seconds of the performance... Just sayin'.

Bruno rocked "Gorilla," although not as hard as he did in concert! Interesting to see the parts they bleeped and didn't!

Lady Gaga has such an amazing voice and absolutely boundless energy. It was ironic that she started "Applause" with recorded booing as part of her performance, and then ended up giving One Direction a pep talk when they were actually booed when they won an award. Good for her!

Saturday 9 on Sunday

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Had dinner with Jim and Carla at Iron Cactus up north last night. (I've never seen that place so empty. Strange!) Carla told us all about her exciting trip to Europe earlier this summer. Her BFF's son graduated from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (Paul McCartney's school) so she and her friend made the trip for his grad. Paul spoke at graduation and even took the time to shake all the graduates' hands. The girls also took a 14-day European cruise while they were there. Nice!

Saturday 9: Easy Lover

1) This song is about a heartbreaker who just can't commit. Have you ever fallen for an "easy lover?"
No, I was never attracted to that type of guy.

2) This song is one of Crazy Sam's "earwigs." Each time she hears it, it bores in and stays in her head forever! (Hear it here, if you dare!) Do you have a song like that?
Wait. Isn't it "earWORM?" The last song I listened to always gets stuck in my head until I hear the next one.

3) Both Phil Collins and Philip Bailey have stars on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. Have you ever visited Hollywood?
I have not! I would love to.

4) Hollywood is the movie capital of the world. What's the last movie you saw in the theater?
The Conjuring

5) Phil Collins was a child actor in his native England, appearing onstage in musicals like Oliver! Can you think of another child performer who went on to entertainment industry success as an adult?
Justin Timberlake

6) Philip Bailey joined Earth, Wind & Fire while still in college, so he's been a performer throughout his working life, as well. Have you ever been tempted to try your hand at show biz?
I always toyed around with the idea of being a backup singer, but I never got serious about it. I was the lead singer in a band in high school for a New York minute. That's about as close to "pursuing a career in show biz" as I got.

7) Is there a profession that you never, under any circumstances, want to try?
paratrooper

8) What are you looking forward to right now?
Aggie football opener against Rice next Saturday!

9) Do you suffer from trypanophobia (fear of needles/injections)? Or can you bravely donate blood or get a shot, without freaking out?
I was just telling Crystal this story. I used to be extremely afraid of needles, to the point that they had to hold me down to give me my MMR booster when I was thirteen. When I was 21 I was diagnosed with cancer and got over my needle fear really quick. Since then, I can take any sort of injection, blood draw or IV they wanna give me. Incidentally, Crystal has a fear of needles so bad that she gets nauseated just seeing a syringe.

Ladies, No Regrets

Friday, August 23, 2013

Boy, it sure is therapeutic to have a place to rant about things, save as a draft, and then completely delete the post later! I just deleted five old posts in draft from the past four weeks or so, ranting about one thing that's really pissing me the frick off at work.

I'm still torqued as hell, but at least I formulated my thoughts into well-organized paragraphs, with a  calculated crescendo to the ultimate state of PISSINESS... Before saving and heading out to happier places.

:)

And now... Friday Night.

Boys, throw it up if you want it.

Mike! Mike Mike Mike. What Day is it, Mike?!

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

HUMP DAY.

YEEEEAH.

The analysts in Data Ops are going to start working one day a week from home. We get to pick our own days. I was going to select the obvious Friday, but I actually like working on Fridays. It's quiet, because a lot of people take Friday off or work from home. I get about 30-40% of my regular number of emails. Everyone is happy, because it's Friday. So I think I'll go with Wednesday.

Know what I'm looking forward to getting done most on Wednesdays? Grocery shopping at about 9 a.m. Whee! Doing it on weeknights has been positively suckeriffic.

There was the most beautiful sunset ever last night! Am I right, Austin?! HOLY cow.

And the moon. Oh wow. It was amazing.

Sunday Survey Time

Sunday, August 18, 2013

Well, my office mate has been following a lead on a new job... and she got it Friday afternoon! She gave her two weeks notice. (What was I just saying about people leaving? Ha!) She'll be back to doing what she loves, so that is awesome. I'm so very happy for her!

In Horsham, Hurricanes Hardly Ever Happen

Saturday, August 17, 2013

We have a vendor out of Horsham in West Sussex, England, with whom I speak at least once a week on a project call. It's always so nice to talk to them, as everyone is so... nice! And their accents are lovely. Just listening to the sophisticated chamber music their company pipes through the line before they join the meeting makes me sit up a bit straighter in my chair and stick my pinky out when I drink my coffee. Very fancy.

Matt is their new project lead. Because he's new, one of the little unusual things he says all the time is, "I will go away and research this and let you know..." (I assume it's an "English" thing, but it may be a "Matt" thing, because the previous PM didn't ever say that.) He just means he'll "get back to me" on it, but it always sounds like he's packing bags and venturing out on an extensive fact-finding mission to the mountains of Tibet. Safe journey, my friend!

Whenever the town of Horsham is brought up, I think of My Fair Lady, when Higgins is trying desperately to get Eliza to stop dropping her H's.

Higgins: In Horsham, Hereford and Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen.
Eliza: In 'Orsham, 'Ereford and 'Ampshire, 'urricanes 'ardly H-EVER 'appen.

Ahahahaaaaa. Audrey Hepburn. Greatness.

I was *thisclose* to finally saying to Matt the other day, "Is it true that in 'Orsham, 'urricanes 'ardly h-ever 'appen?"

And that's fine and well. Except the line is "...HARTFORD, Hereford and Hampshire..."

Geez, I need to get my musical quotes straight.

I would have blamed his confusion on a language barrier. Hee!

Saturday 9: Cowboy Casanova

1) The singer tries to warn her friend against a neighborhood Lothario. Do you advise your friends when it comes to love? Or do you stay out of it?
I may make a comment here and there, if there's an issue I see, but I won't harp on it. You make your own decisions when it comes to matters of the heart. Now, if I knew a guy was a player and you hadn't started dating him yet, I would totally warn you. Once you start dating, that's on you. I'll be there for you when you find out the truth for yourself. :)

2) This song is about the hot guy "leaning up against the record machine." Does your favorite restaurant or bar still have a jukebox?
Nope. This part of the song always reminds me of our high school cafeteria jukebox though.

3) Carrie is an American Idol winner. Have you ever gone online or picked up the phone and voted for a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, American Idol or any similar show?
Yep. Not recently. I think the last time was when Lauren and I were voting like crazy for David Cook on AI.

4) Carrie graduated magna cum laud and majored in journalism, yet instead of being a reporter, she's a country music superstar. How similar are your life/career today to the way you envisioned them when you were 21?
Immensely different. I was on a path towards either New Mexico or Washington state, pursuing an engineering career.

5) Carrie also competed in beauty pageants and was a runner up for Miss NSU (Northeastern State University). If you were a contestant in a pageant, what would you do for the talent competition?
a dramatic reading from one of my erotic novels- heh

6) This December, Carrie is scheduled to star in a televised remake of The Sound of Music. Do you have any year-end plans?
I wish I did!

7) She is married to NHL player Mike Fisher, center for the Nashville Predators. What's your favorite professional sports team?
I have to go with the hometown Houston Texans, but the truth is, I'm not obsessed with any particular professional sport at the moment. Bring on college football!

8) Hockey is a tough game! Do you currently have an owie or an ouchie or a boo-boo that requires a bandaid?
Not yet. Crystal and I are going to a kickboxing gym this morning though.

9) Summer brings a lot of power outages and brown outs. Do you have a flashlight? If so, have you checked the batteries?
We have a few flashlights in our room under the bed. The batteries are good.

Bruno Mars in Austin

Thursday, August 15, 2013

I love Ellie Goulding's music, and she is adorable, but her voice is very whispy and airy and just not well suited for an arena. To her credit, the sound mixing could have been a lot better. We could barely hear her over the music. She'd be great in a club.

Bruno Mars and his band were friggin' AWESOME. Sexiest concert I've been to in years. It was a little reminiscent of a Prince concert. And all those hot guys (who are talented singers/musicians as well- ooh la la) rubbing up on everything on the stage, and the stage itself, all night long...

Holy. F'in. Crapstix.

Loved it.

You got your legs up in the sky
With the devil in your eyes
Let me hear you say you want it all
Say it now, say it now...

...Yeah, I got a fistful of your hair
But you don't look like you're scared
You're just smiling

Tell me, "Daddy, it's yours"
'Cause you know how I like it

You's a dirty little lover
If the neighbors call the cops

Call the sheriff
Call the SWAT
We don't stop
We keep rocking while they knocking on our door
And you're screaming, "Give it to me baby...
Give it to me motherf*er..."

(Bang bang, indeed.)

And a couple got engaged during "Marry You." Awww!

But yeah...

But first... I missed a PERFECT opportunity at work.

*forehead smack*

Director says, "You look nice! Your hair is curly and everything... what's the occasion?"

I say, "Oh I just wanted to go with the curly hair today..."

I have been waiting for WEEKS since his last public observance of my dressier than usual appearance, for him to say something again, so I could say, "I have an interview!"

Dang it!

We'd all croak if anyone up and left right now. So it's evil, but funny. And I would totally go there for the laugh.

And now... WE DANCE!

"...Shake the Glitter Off Your Clothes Now"

Sunday, August 11, 2013

Two of my high school friends, who reconnected at our 25th class reunion (no drama- they were both single at the time), got engaged yesterday. Awwwwww! That's a LOT of couples for the Class of '85 at CCHS, I think. So cute!!

Saturday 9: Waking Up in Vegas

1) As she sings about her night in Las Vegas, Katy wonders if she "got hitched last night dressed up like Elvis." Tell us about the last wedding you attended.
Last year, we went to Joshua and Brittany's wedding. It was outdoors, in the country at sunset. Beautiful!

2) Whenever Crazy Sam visits Las Vegas, she stays at the Paris Hotel and Casino. Have you ever been to Las Vegas, Nevada? What about Paris, France?
Las Vegas- twice. Once with girlfriends and once with my aunt and her BFF.
Paris, France- nope. The only reason I have any desire to see Paris at all is to put a padlock on the Pont des Arts. My dad did it with Ursula, and told me Jeff and I should do it as well. You put a padlock on the bridge and toss the key into the Seine. Then the only way your love can be broken is to find the key and unlock the lock. I just love that. :)

3) Do you enjoy gambling? Have you had any success at it?
I don't enjoy gambling at all. Statistics have the player always losing, so why do it? I've gambled a teensy bit in Vegas and on cruise ships, with the complete expectation that I would lose every dime I wagered (which I did, except for one time with Jeff on his first cruise), but it's not really my thing.

4) Las Vegas is served by the RTC Bus Service and the Vegas Monorail System connects many of casinos on The Strip. When was the last time you rode a bus or a train?
at the last Show of Homes

5) It's not unusual for the mercury to hit 100º in Vegas in August. Which are you more comfortable in -- extreme heat or bone-chilling cold?
Ack. I guess in cold, you can snuggle with a friend or run around to get warmer, while in heat there's not much you can do to cool off, but either is miserable.

6) As a little girl, Katy Perry sang nothing but gospel. Do you remember any church songs from your childhood?
I think most church songs I remember are actually from CCE. (Catholics represent!) "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands..." The songs I remember most from my childhood are radio songs and songs from my mom's albums, which she played all the time- mostly Tom Jones, along with Engelbert Humperdinck, Beach Boys, ABBA, The Eagles...

7) She made her film debut as the voice of Smurfette in The Smurfs (2011). Who is your all-time favorite cartoon character?
Bugs Bunny! So funny. So sarcastic.

8) Do you consider yourself a picky eater?

Nope, but I live with two picky eaters.

9) You receive an invitation to a party that starts at 7:00 PM. When will you arrive?
7:05. Yeah, I'm that girl. I wanna help if you need something done, and I don't want anyone to think I'm not coming.

Train/Gavin/The Script in Austin

Saturday, August 10, 2013

I forgot to tell y'all about Train/Gavin DeGraw/The Script at Austin 360 Amphitheater last weekend!

The Austin 360 Amphitheater is beautiful, with limestone walls, armchair seats and a grass seating area up top. It's a good intimate size, so no seat is a bad one. If you can score a table on the tracks early in the afternoon, you can just sit there and have beer and snacks all evening and enjoy a great view of the stage as well.

I can capture the night in one word- FUN. Even the taped music between sets had the audience singing and dancing, especially the 70's/80's rap and disco before Train came out. All the artists were so upbeat (despite the unrelenting heat) and involved the audience to a larger than typical extent. Each of the three acts were walking through the whole theater at one or more points during their sets.

The crowd was fantastic. All age groups. We had a group of college guys on our row. The guys don't usually sing as much as the gals do at concerts, but the guy next to me sang every song. And he had a set of pipes on him! Bravo.

Then there was a girl in front of us who did all the motions with the backup singers all night. Her BF was finally able to get her to stop, but it was very amusing. Thanks, Beer!

An older guy was there with his adult kids, and he really put on a show when KC and the Sunshine Band started playing between sets. His kids joined in about midway through the song, singing and doing The Bump with their dad.

Martina McBride happened to be there that night, so she joined in for "The Weight," which the openers and Train have been performing at the end of each concert on the Mermaids of Alcatraz tour. Pretty cool. This clip sort of sums up the fun mood...

One of my fave concerts ever.

Mmmmmkaaaay...

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

OMG, y'all. This is the worst lie ever from a guy about his marital status. And I've heard a couple of doozies the last few years, so brace yourselves.

Steph's former boyfriend from back in the day, who's been talking seriously about moving to Dallas to be near her, says that he's been divorced for several years. Recently, he admitted the ex-wife has been living with him since the divorce, but they sleep in separate rooms, blah blah blah...

Steph has tried to get him to friend her on Facebook all this time, but he never has, although they talk on the phone and text all day long. Regarding his Facebook relationship status (which she can't even see), he said:

Just so you know, I had to change it back to "married," because when I switched to "single," too many women were hitting on me.
Ahahaha! He's GOT to be kidding.

She's not talking to him anymore. :)

My department is doing the 100 Squats a Day for 30 Days Challenge, invented by Crystal to get us moving. More than getting a workout, I appreciate the entertainment value of seeing all of us in a room doing squats together in our work clothes. (Crystal is the best, because she wears 6-inch stilettos every day.) We do five sessions of 20 squats each. Melissa makes us hold for ten seconds at #10 and #20, or some other interesting torture each session.

I suggested that next month we dance for one song five times a day. Each of us gets to pick a song from our phone to play. It was wildly accepted by the gang (well most of them), so next month it's the 5 Songs a Day for 30 Days Challenge. We may even make Finance join in. For now, they just like to watch.

(Yeah.... I'd heard that about them.)

Up Too Early for a Saturday

Saturday, August 3, 2013

Cathy is on her way to the ATX. Whee! It's not Vegas, but it'll do in a pinch. We're going to Gavin DeGraw/Train tomorrow and we're both taking off Monday. So YAAAAY!

I thought of my mom when I was making up the guest bed with fresh sheets this morning. Mom was an army brat and she taught me that when you want to make a bed really fast, you don't walk back and forth from side to side, like we all do, tucking and straightening each layer on each side. You pull and tuck and make up one side and then do the other. It actually works!

While I have a few minutes, I have to talk about this minimum wage thing. People who work at fast food restaurants as a career do not make minimum wage. Sorry, but they just don't. They start at minimum wage and then they get raises and promotions, just like the rest of the free world. There is an evolution to working. You don't make $7.25 an hour for 50 years until you retire from McDonald's.

If someone has a family, and can't get a job that requires training or education, and wants to work in fast food or any of the other places that start at $7.25 an hour, that is their choice. There are other jobs that pay more. It may be night shifts or physical work or some other less desirable environment than McDonald's, but there are choices, if money is the prime concern. There are also other industries (healthcare for example) that have positions that start at minimum wage, but who promote into far better paying positions or whose benefit packages may even pay for employees to go to college. It's all about choices in life.

If people made $15 an hour as a newbie working at Burger King (that's $30,000 per year for a 40-hour work week), who would ever go to school or train to take a $15 an hour first job as a programmer or a plumber? What a waste of time.

There is monetary value to acquiring a skill or advanced education. There is also monetary value to staying at a fast food or retail job started without any time or money or stress invested in acquiring experience or education beforehand, and then working one's way up to supervisor, manager, etc. There should be monetary value to all of those things.

Raise minimum wage to $15 per hour and all other industries/jobs will have to raise pay accordingly. The costs of everything we buy as consumers will go up as well. Not that I would mind the raise, but the country will go broke doing that.

Just my two cents. That'll getcha about one piece of salt water taffy from the bulk bin.

Avoid banana.
