Burrito-ing Explained

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

First I want to mention that Janeen is on her first cruise this week, and I am SO excited for her! She and some friends are doing a 7-night Mexican Riviera cruise out of California, which I have never done. I'm sure she's having fun!! I can't wait to hear about it when she gets back.

OK. This "burrito-ing." It's something Laura's 17-year-old son and his friends are doing, and it cracks me up every time I think about it.

bur·ri·to (bŏŏ-rē'tō, bə-)
v. intr. bur·ri·to·ing, bur·ri·toed, bur·ri·tos
To unwrap a Taco Bell burrito, place it gloppy-side-up on its paper wrapping and leave it at someone's doorstep, slide it under a teacher's door, or otherwise bequeath it upon an unsuspecting victim. If it happens to you, you have been "burritoed."

It also means "small donkey." Just an FYI.

I told Laura "At least it's not as bad as..." I was going to say "toilet paper in your trees." Laura jumped in and said, "a flaming bag of sh*t." LMAO! DUDE. Why don't we skip right to a horse head in the bed? It ain't as bad as that either.

Too funny! And... watch out, peeps. This burrito-ing appeals to me as cheap and harmless entertainment.

Webcam Ahoy!

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

We finally got a webcam. I'm using it to chat with my dad and my relatives in Germany, so please- no kinky commentary from the peanut gallery. Hehe.

Tonight I tried it out for the first time. It's pretty neat! I got to see Dad and Ursula, and Dad showed me their newly decorated deck, just outside his window in Binghamton.

One thing I realized right when Dad answered is that you have to make sure you look presentable before getting involved in a webcam conversation. You can't be lounging around in PJs and no makeup for this stuff. I had not one moment to even arrange my hair. Luckily I was good other than that. First thing Dad said was, "You look great! Are you going out tonight?" Whew!

Saturday 9

The kiddos got home from camp after midnight last night. They had a blast. It's 8:00 am now, and a kid after my own heart already has her pics up on Facebook. Woo!

My Austin Aggie buddies suck. Just wanted to say that. They don't want to do a day in College Station with me. "Why do you want to go there? It's not the same. None of the cool places are there anymore." Where is the love, people? Maybe my Aggie brother-in-law will go with me. (Steven does not travel out of Dallas unless he has to, but I can be pretty annoying persuasive.) Or maybe I'll get one of my t-sip friends to go along. They can take pictures of me in front of all the "cool places" that supposedly aren't there anymore. :p

1. What part of the world and country do you live in?
Austin, Texas, USA

2. Where is the furthest from home that you have been?
Germany

3. What travel destination have you enjoyed the most?
Hawaii

4. What travel destination have you enjoyed the least?
Cancun. It sure is gorgeous, but the constant onslaught of timeshare salespeople drove me crazy.

5. Is there somewhere you’d like to visit but have not?
Australia/New Zealand. I lump them together, because when I go, I'll hit both.

6. Do you prefer traveling to see historic places or to hit the beach and relax?
I love both. Anywhere I can spend half my day running around seeing and doing things, and the other half hanging out at the beach, is the place for me.

7. What popular vacation destination have you never considered because you think you’d not like it?
Paris

8. Where did you travel to most recently?
New England and Canada

9. Do you like day trip “mini-vacations”?
Yep. Let's go!

Oh Internet, How I Love Thee

Friday, July 25, 2008

I was without web access for upwards of 7 hours yesterday, due to an unfortunate lightning strike that destroyed our router. (It also dorked up our AC controller, which had the house at at a meat locker temp of 60 degrees by this morning. Yikes!)

How many times did I jump on the computer to look up something on the net during that time? Probably 6 times. I was also waiting on an email and working on a Foundation event. It's never a good time to lose your internet.

Jeff is excited that we got a new and improved router, so it all works out for the best I think. Me? I'm just so happy to be connected again. Maybe not inspired enough to write a full-blown sonnet, but pretty close.

What? You're still reading after that less-than-awesome title? Big hugs for you then.

A second-grader broke his arm last week while I was visiting Laura at the summer program at the school. Didn't make a sound- no shrieking or crying or anything that I would have been doing. Lauren had a dislocated elbow when she was 2 or 3. She did the same thing. Just got really quiet. Skeery!

Did I mention that my office is reorganized now? Very nice. My photo with Mr. Chasez made it through the move. That's all that really matters in the end. Hehe.

Yesterday I was missing the cat a lot. About 4pm, the UPS guy rings the bell. (Um, YAY!) He delivers... cat food I had ordered. Yeesh, man. That really sucked.

Happy hour at Kathy's went late last night, which was good since I was late getting there. It was lots of fun!!

The Dark Knight

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Jeff and I went to The Dark Knight last night. Also had dinner at Madam Mam's - yummo. Next time you're there, be sure to order the tod mun chicken appetizer. Little ground chicken patties with sweet and sour cucumber sauce. OMG. So good.

The Dark Knight was awesome of course. Bad points- the movie is a little long and Batman sounds like a lifetime smoker. What is up with that voice? I just kept giggling. Very distracting. (Not my giggling. The voice. Although my giggling may have been distracting to others.)

Cannot say enough about Heath Ledger's performance. Just so different from anything he's played before. And so believable and craaaazy. And the pencil thing? LOL. We were all dying laughing while absolutely horrified at the same time.

The coolest thing in the movie to me was Batman's motorcycle. Way cool, man.

p.s. The new Facebook is working again this morning.

New Facebook Having Server Issues

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Before you view your Facebook pages via the new.facebook.com URL, be aware that many people (like me!) are now unable to view their pages at all after doing so. Firefox gives the error "the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete" and IE will get me to the login page at facebook.com, but will not bring up my pages. It's a Facebook server problem.

Yahoo Answers has many questions going about it. You can access your pages in a minimal format through iphone.facebook.com if you need to see them. Hopefully by morning (it's almost midnight here... ugh...) it will be fixed.

Target and a Meme

Grant called last night while he and Amy were walking around Target. He remarked that Target shopping was actually pretty entertaining. Pretty entertaining?! I told him how whenever one of us has to go to Target, we always call someone else to tag along because it is such a great source of weeknight entertainment. He clarified that it was not that entertaining, and that guys don't even call each other to head up to Home Depot or Best Buy. Well they're just missing out.

Today's meme is from Curious as a Cat:

1) What is the most disgusting thing you've ever had in your mouth?

It's not a thing per se, but as a child one summer I got poison oak on my tongue. All those little fluid-filled bumps. THAT was disgusting.

2) What is the boldest thing you've ever done?
I could go with the experimental cancer therapy I had in college, but I think the time I confronted a cheer mom beats that. She was letting her entire team cut in front of us at the short-staffed concession stand in San Marcos. No one in the line in which we'd waited almost an hour was saying anything! I had to do it. Considering the reputation of cheer moms, I think I was pretty brave to take her on. ;)

3) If you could pick one person you know well to be more religious (or spiritual), who would it be?
Other than my child, as long as my friends and family aren't members of any weird cults, I honestly don't have any issues with or feel it is my place to influence their spiritual beliefs. The least spiritual/religious person I know is Kathy, but that is totally cool with me.

4) What is your partner's best feature?
Hunky shoulders.

5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

It reminds me of the first time Lori and I rode Greased Lightning at Astroworld in 7th grade. We had wanted to ride that thing for a couple of years, but were terrified. Finally we just did it, and we rode it like twenty times that day!

Kiddo Off to Dallas

Monday, July 21, 2008

LoLo is away at church camp for the week. I was up at 5am to take her to the meeting place. Can't believe I'm sill awake. This may be a random post. Just a warning. :)

Kathy has finally set up a weekly happy hour at her place every Wednesday night, when she's in town. Which doesn't really make it weekly, since the girl travels out the wazoo, but it will be fun!

Threadgill's food is overrated. It had to be said.

Jeff got a patent. Coolio, eh?

Tonight we rearrange the computer/hobby room to a more feng shui-ish arrangement, hopefully with nearly zero clutter. Y'all know I'm all tingly about that. Eee!

Mamma Mia! and Other Saturday Mayhem

Sunday, July 20, 2008

First of all, is anyone else's Facebook News Feed all jacked up? Mine keeps switching from being sorted by date to a random, disorganized smattering of my friends' activities.

Lauren and I saw Mamma Mia! yesterday and loved every cheesy minute. Our audience was awesome, which really makes the movie experience. The theater was absolutely packed. Everyone clapped and laughed a lot. The only thing that would have been better is if everyone had been singing along. I'll have to go the Alamo Drafthouse for that.

Jeff and I saw the musical with Laura and Rich a few years ago, and I don't remember the choreography being quite as sucky as the movie. Pierce Brosnan cannot sing, folks. But he rocks out during those songs at the end. Go see it- it's a lot of fun!

Laura and I hit the town last night on a serious mission to do something blogworthy. Um, yeah. We'll try again next weekend.

In Bruges

Friday, July 18, 2008

Saw the movie In Bruges last night. Bruges is a beautiful city in Belgium.

When Colin Farrell's character Ray and his love interest Chloe first talk, they are alone on a street at night. He starts up this conversation with something about how "midgets" have a high rate of suicide. Chloe is smiling. My husband says to me, "I suppose you'd fall for that line, too."

People. If Colin Farrell raised an eyebrow in my direction, I'd fall for it.

When Chloe eventually walks away, she does one of the coolest things EVER.  When she gets about 15-20 feet from him, she tosses her card with her name and number over her shoulder onto the street. He runs over and picks it up. How awesome is it that he would have to still be watching her walk away at that point to be able to get her number?! Two thumbs up on that move.

It's a strange film, but the dark humor will crack you up throughout.

Spanky

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Our 9-year-old cat has been acting strangely on and off for a couple of weeks. Last night and through today, he was acting like he was seeing things that weren't there and he was mostly under the bed or in our closet. About 5 o'clock, he started having seizures every 15 minutes or so. (Note- seizures are very scary to watch but not harmful to the cat.)

The vet (an Aggie doc thankyouverymuch) at the animal hospital discovered that he had super low blood sugar, which probably was making him see weird things, and was definitely causing the seizures. After some tests, they decided he had a pancreatic tumor and wouldn't be able to regulate his blood sugar anymore. He had to be put to sleep.

Jeff stayed with our last cat when he was euthanized (ironically enough, with diabetes). I stayed with Spanky this time. And now my head hurts and I'm going to bed.

Saturday 9 on Wednesday

Because I have nothing of even minor importance to say today- lol...

1. In a social setting, are you more of a talker or a listener?
If I don't know anyone, I'm more of a listener. If I know the group, I'm a talker.

2. Do you take compliments well?
I think so.

3. Did you ever go to camp as a kid?
Girl Scout Camp a few times. Loved the activities and the people. Hated camping. Give me room service any day.

4. What was your favorite game as a kid?
Scrabble.

5. If a sexy person was pursuing you, but you knew the person was married, would you go for it anyway?
I assume this question assumes I'm single. I would say no, because there are plenty of other single people out there not to have to play second fiddle to someone's wife.

6. Use three words to describe yourself?
Fun. Creative. Optimistic.

7. If your house were on fire, what would be the first thing you grabbed?
Assuming all live things were already safe... My purse. Actually my drivers license. Who wants to have to replace that, and without any other form of ID?

8. Do you look like your mom or dad?
My dad, mostly.

9. Anything big ever happen in your hometown?
In League City? Not a dang thing.

NYC/Cruise Re-Cap, Part II

Monday, July 14, 2008

The funny stuff!

New York City: At Ground Zero, we were following signs around the area with arrows that said "WTC PATH." When Jeff wanted veer off to find the Visitor Center, I said surely it was on the WTC Path and I wanted to follow it to see what was there. Turns out, WTC PATH is the rail system station (the Port Authority Trans-Hudson train), not a path at all.

New York City: After Ground Zero, we wanted to go to Grand Central Station. I said, "I wonder if the subway goes to Grand Central Station." I wish I could say I was trying to be cute.

Cruise Day 1: The comedian remarked about Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Oasis of the Seas (omg), that "it's so big that it has it's own bad neighborhood. Don't go down that hall, man! Those people are mean!"

Cruise Day 3: Fogged in at sea. The Captain's Cocktail Party was that night. They have to blow the horn in heavy fog every couple of minutes. We said we'd know if the Captain had too much champagne, because the horn would go from "baaaaah baaaaah" to "buh-buh-buh-BUH-buh... buh-buh"

Cruise Day 4: Love and Marriage Game. Three couples- newlyweds married one week, a couple married 20 years and a couple married 61 years- play something similar to The Newlywed Game. One question was "Where is the most unique place you've made whoopee?" The 80-something wife of the oldest couple said, "last night in the back row of this theater." Everyone cracked up. When the husband came out, he gave the same answer! Mike the Aggie newlywed went over to them and did the "I'm not worthy" bow. Hilarious.

St. John, NB: McLobster (a lobster roll) is available at McDonald's seasonally. No lie.

Cruise Day 6: Royal Caribbean has a fun game called "Battle of the Sexes." Typically this is the large lounge divided into two teams- ladies and guys. The ladies answer trivia questions about "guy stuff" and the guys answer questions about "girly stuff." Anyway, Jeff referred to this upcoming game all day as "The Sex Show." I don't think that one is on the family cruises.

Portland, ME: There is a microbrewery called 3 Dollar Dewey's. The Duck Tour guide joked that it got its name when it used to be a brothel with "1 Dollar Lookies, 2 Dollar Touchies and 3 Dollar Deweys."

Cruise Day 7: The comedian tonight said that when our home port in New Jersey used to be called Bayonne, the people there were like "(grabbing crotch) Yo! How you doin'?" Now that it is called Cape Liberty, people are all snooty and "How do you do? Welcome!" He also did a dead-on Jack Nicholson impression: "We went into Halifax... Back into the fog... Went into St. John... Back into the fog... Went into Bar Harbor... Back into the fog... You know we're going into the same port every day. They're just changing the signs."

Boston: Nothing made this Texan giggle more than a family from New Jersey making fun of the Boston tour guide's accent. "She's trying to say co-ah (car), but she's saying cah! Ahaha!"

Cruise Day 9: During the "Majority Rules" game, they asked what people would most like to see on the new Oasis of the Seas ship. Our team voted for a roller coaster. That was the second most popular. Number one answer? A strip club. I guess it could go in the bad neighborhood.

NYC/Cruise Re-Cap, Part I

Sunday, July 13, 2008

Here's the very basic rundown of what we did. Except for three days of dense fog, we had amazing weather!

New York City: My third trip to the city. Kathy L and Scott K had both recommended the Courtyard Marriott Times Square. It was perfect location and price. Rode the NYC subway for the first time. It was great! Visited Ground Zero and the World Trade Center Visitor Center. Saw Legally Blonde- OMG, OMG you guys (a song from the show...) - it was freaking fantastic!!

Cruise Day 1 (Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas sails out of Cape Liberty, NJ): Spent the afternoon hanging out around the ship. The Statue of Liberty was right out our window at dinner as we left. First night's show the Cruise Director (Dave from Australia- yummy) came out to a smattering of applause. The show began with the same crowd reaction. Lauren and I were thinking, what's up with these people? When the comedian was performing, he said, "New Englanders are a notoriously tight crowd. You guys need to lighten up! It's a cruise!" Seriously, until the last day, the audience was fairly quiet, many of them sitting with arms folded like "go ahead, impress me." One-on-one, people couldn't have been nicer. Must be a group thing!

July 4th in New London, CT: Such a nice little town. We met the Mayor downtown in the square. Had clam chowder at a restaurant overlooking the harbor. Visited Nathan Hale's schoolhouse, even upstairs where the wood and everything is original. Jeff, Lauren and I tied with two other teams to win July 4th Trivia on the ship that night. Woo!

Sea Day: Completely fogged in at sea. The ship's horn was blowing literally every two minutes. Very cold and could not see a thing off the ship. All sorts of activities on board.

Halifax, Nova Scotia: Went to the Maritime Museum to see the Titanic exhibit, and also visited the cemeteries where many Titanic victims are buried. On the way out of the port, drunk Canadians mooned us from their little boat. That was funny. Back into the fog...

St. John, New Brunswick: Saw the Reversing Falls Rapids. When the Bay of Fundy is at high tide, it washes into the river, reversing the flow several miles inland. VERY cool. Lots of harbor seals were in the river, chasing the fish that got washed in. Also took a tour of the city. They get the school children involved by having them plant marigolds all around the city, and also painting murals around town. There is virtually no graffiti or vandalism because of these programs. Back into the fog....

Bar Harbor, ME: Bar Harbor is so named because of the bar that appears at low tide. There's a road on it, and you'll be trapped on the other side if you don't get back before high tide. We just had lunch in Bar Harbor- lobster of course. It was really hot that day, but at least we were out of the fog.

Portland, ME: Took a Duck Tour here. Those are fun, if you have one in your city! It's an amphibious vehicle. Everywhere we went downtown, the kids were quacking at us. Very cute. 90% of the lobster in the US comes from Maine, and they are still catching the same amount as they were 100 years ago. Very strict guidelines as to which lobster can be caught and which must be thrown back. Saw a family of seahawks living on a big metal post in the bay.

Boston, MA: Lauren is into all things scary, so we did the Salem Witch Tour here. The Witch Museum is interesting, and we also saw the memorial in town. Salem is absolutely gorgeous. Went down the famous Chestnut Street, “one of the most beautiful streets in America.” So pretty.

Sea Day: Again, lots and lots of ship activities. Throughout the cruise, we were always attending Karaoke Superstar, which is like American Idol on board. This was Karaoke Superstar Finale day, and we were there with all the regulars, cheering on our favorites. (Our newlywed Dallas Aggie, Mike, didn't win. He did Eminem's "Lose Yourself." I think it was a song choice issue.) Took a thousand pictures of the Cruise Director while he ran the Belly Flop competition. Beautiful day!!

Last Day: Cape Liberty is horrible to get in and out of. Just saying. Allow a million hours. And there isn't much guidance outside of the cruise terminal. Just ask someone who looks official, and they are happy to give you info on where to go and what to do, to get where you need to be.

The Bachelorette

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

I just love DeAnna. She is so fun and she's being very honest with the guys about what she wants and how hard the process is for her. Lauren and I always wonder where she gets her cute clothes.

Last night's thing with the "fantasy suite card" with Jesse was hilarious. We totally thought he would be one to forgo the suite, with the cautious way he's handled things so far. We were at the edge of our seats, thinking he might actually blow this thing if he skipped out. But, he was just teasing. LOL

(We actually hate the fantasy suite night. The thought of spending the night with three different people on three consecutive nights is kinda disturbing. More disturbing is the thought of being one of the three. At least they don't have them stay in the same suite each night.)

Graham turned out to be a royal jerk. Didn't he? He spent the whole time with her being insecure about the other guys. It was his to lose. He doesn't have to be nasty to her afterwards. He broke her heart, not the other way around.

And Jeremy. Can I just say that guy has the coolest Dallas condo I have ever seen? Holy crap. The furniture, the view of downtown. Amazing. His downfall was to think he had it wrapped up from the beginning. He can be as perfect a guy as any, but if the chemistry isn't there, it isn't there.

I'm going for Jason. I would like to request that he wear a backwards baseball cap just one more time in the last episode.
