I'd Take That for $3 Million

Thursday, May 28, 2009

RE: the "anonymous" (a.k.a. Laura) comment on my last post, Laura asked if I would pay a million dollars for a week with George Clooney. I said, "Of course I would spend three million dollars for a week with George Clooney."

Slip of the tongue. I meant ONE million. Hysterical!

A couple of days ago, Jeff and I spent our anniversary dinner talking about Jon and Kate Gosselin. LOL. I told him all about the video interview with Kate's brother and sister-in-law. (It's in 3 parts. You have to click the links in the text to get to the following pieces.) Jeff made an excellent point about them getting all over Kate for not being a "mom" and having help with housework, etc.-- In the Gosselin's household, Jon and Kate have switched the traditional roles, with Jon quitting his job to be a stay-at-home dad. He is the one who should be doing all the cleaning and stuff around the house. Very true!

So while I agree that perhaps Kate's pushing her books touting herself as a supermom is a kind of farce, they shouldn't be criticizing her for not folding laundry. It also seems that Kate surprised Jon with that infamous contract. It wasn't something that he wanted or asked for. Interesting also is the reason for the brother doing the interview at all- an argument with Kate over the fact that Jody was getting paid by TLC for being on the show, which she should.

Still a very sad thing to see those kids careening towards a family disaster they don't even see coming.

We all watched The Notebook last night for the millionth time... or the three millionth. Heh. Such an awesome movie. I cry every time! One of the best movie quotes ever, from Lon: "Now, before you go and say no, I'll have you know that I am an excellent dancer and my intentions are completely dishonorable." I love that line.

Real Housewives of Austin

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Over lunch, Laura and I cast our own personal Real Housewives of Austin show.

1) Laura. The 3rd grade teacher with a high school daughter and a son about to leave for college. Laura is hilarious, and has a slew of interesting quirks that the audience will only discover as the show progresses over years. Her husband Rich will not appear on the show, because he's so embarrassed he'll want to maintain his privacy.

2) Katherine. The stay-at-home mom who will go by Katherine even though only her mother called her that, when she was a child. She'll say it's because there's another Kathy on the show, but it's really because she wants to sound more sophisticated. She's known Laura for about 14 years. Her daughter is also in high school. Her husband Jeff will want to be on every episode, commenting on the latest storyline.

3) Sharon. The 3rd grade teacher who works with Laura. She is a recent empty-nester and the Voice of Reason. She'll be perfect for those scenes where someone is doing something stupid and she tells them to just stop it. She's also very sweet, to balance out Laura. She'll sometimes be late for carpool which will drive Laura up a wall. I haven't met Sharon's husband, but he will definitely be on the show, because she says he's hot.

4) Tracy. The stay-at-home mom who has the only house comparable to anyone on the actual Housewives series. Sharon is friends with Tracy's sister-in-law. Kathy and Tracy know each other from Bunco. Laura knows Tracy from Mothers Club. Tracy is way fun and very down-to-earth, though she jaunts out to LA to see a Britney Spears concert for her birthday, and that sort of thing. Her husband Vince is a former chef, and I'm not sure if he'll be on or not, but I'm hoping he might totally make us some rockin' meals now and then.

5) Kathy. The self-admitted work-a-holic single mom. A friend of Katherine's since high school. Laura and Sharon know Kathy because her son went to the school where they teach. Kathy has an autistic son in middle school. She is a brilliant PhD and a successful marketing director whose worldwide travels, corporate expense account and wild client parties in Madrid will add a lot of life to the show. We'll all scoff when she complains about having to fly coach to California. Whether her ex wants to or not, we won't let him appear on the show. :p

So come on, Bravo. REAL housewives!

Watching Tyler Florence cook makes me wanna jump him. Seriously. And he is not a super-hot guy. He is more the total package deal. He just made arrabiata sauce for his calamari. Spicy!

Speaking of being inappropriately turned on- Ewan McGregor as a priest in Angels & Demons. Whoa. We didn't have priests like that when I was growing up. And the lightning strikes in 3...2....

Austin Parade of Homes 2009

This year's Parade of Homes is very very cool. Usually the decor is traditional with some transitional tossed in. This time it's all contemporary. There are a lot of neat lighting options, including light emanating from behind a 1-inch-wide strip of plastic, flush with the wall.

There are fireplaces with the crystals instead of wood, which I love. I'm not a fan of stained concrete floors, but one house has painted concrete, which looked fantastic. One house has a second-floor outdoor seating area with grass. There are neato water features everywhere, and awesome master bathroom showers and tubs. I also found a perfect tile for our bathroom remodel.

My favorite house is the first one (4229 Camacho). The layout is amazing. The decor is beautiful. It has the coolest sun room. The kitchen, dining room and living room are all one room. So open! Gorgeous!!

Bonus- you get to park on one of the old Mueller Airport runways to catch the tram to the entrance.

Monday

Monday, May 25, 2009

Today we're heading to the Parade of Homes, benefiting Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, Austin Children's Shelter and Austin Children's Museum. This year it's at Mueller. All green building. Homes $1M+.

I have successfully gotten "Boom Boom Pow" stuck in Lauren's head. She still hates the song, so at this point I consider it a mission partially accomplished. Now on to Jeff.

Yesterday I was commenting how baggy panties are the worst incorrectly-sized clothing item. Far worse than tight panties, even. Here is a bit of the witty repartee that occurred next--

Lauren: It sounds like it hurts- like it would chafe.
Kathy: No, it's just floppy.
Lauren: That's what she said.

Without. Missing. A BEAT.

I had to high-five her on that one.

"Just Use Your Real Credit Card Number"

Sunday, May 24, 2009

I have been told by Discover Card and Amazon.com to "just use your real credit card number," rather than a temporary number for purchases at Amazon.com. This is after I bought MP3s the other day and the temporary credit card number which I've used for at least a year there was suddenly rejected.

I got a new temporary number, and that one went through. Then I made a purchase of merchandise, which was rejected. Discover says it is because the purchase is going through under another merchant name, rather than Amazon.com. Well, that has been the case for forever. So what is the deal?

Discover's answer? Use your actual card number. It is secure and in the unlikely case it is compromised, I am under no liability. Yeah, well, we have many bills auto-paid by that card every month (for the cashback, which seems may end soon with the new credit card law). When it was hijacked online a few years ago, it was a hassle and a half to change all those accounts to a new card number.

So I called Amazon. The guy barely spoke English. I have absolutely no problem if you don't speak my language, unless you are a customer service rep in the United States, trying to help me resolve a problem. So frustrating. Like Discover, he told me "just use your real account number." He said it is "completely secure and will absolutely never be compromised at Amazon.com." How awesome! They should teach other online merchants their security breakthrough so we can live in a hacker-free world of fairies and unicorns.

So I used my actual number for this particular purchase, and I am removing it from my Amazon account ASAP. I've sent an email to customer service at Amazon about it. We'll see what happens.

"We Kicked Your Ass" BBQ

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Bob lives in England and is married to a Brit. He just mentioned that he hosts a "We Kicked Your Ass" barbecue there every July 4th. LOL

I am trying to produce a song video with clips from my home movie DVDs. I'm afraid of viruses with the freeware DVD to AVI converters. And I hate my upgrade version of Pinnacle Studio 10, because I have to install 9, then 10, and leave 9 on my system for it to work. Stoooopid. The anal organizationalist in me gets a tic just thinking about the wasted hard drive space. I've never installed it on the new computer.

Random thought of the day: My photo with JC is here in my office. Other than the fact that it's a positively fantastic picture of him, errrr, us... it always makes me smile to think about being able to be there with Lauren (whose photo with him is not on her wall-lol) and also how amazing Tonya was to jump through hoops with the radio station to get passes for me after I had given up. Sweet!

Ten Favorite Cities
from Ten on Tuesday

1. Austin- it's a city with a personality and a size small enough to feel like a close community. Music is everywhere.
2. Orlando- Beauuuutiful place. LOTS of entertainment.
3. Las Vegas- 24-hour entertainment. I don't even gamble. I just love the energy there. I don't ever want to sleep.
4. Toronto- So clean and pleasant. The people are great. Loved that a lot of families live downtown in high-rise apartments.
5. Munich- Picturesque city with the cleanest, most efficient train system I've ever seen.
6. Phoenix- I just love the mood there. Laid back. Love the desert scenery and the restaurants are awesome.
7. London- Love the people, the pubs, the whole royal thing, the history.
8. Houston- My hometown, yo. It's close to the beach, has NASA and all my hangouts from growing up.
9. Dallas- Lots of things to do. City life with the country life just outside.
10. New York City- I like NYC a lot. I think it suffers from ego, so I put it last of the ten. Love the shows, the restaurants, the personalities.

Memorial Day Weekend

Friday, May 22, 2009

Also Geek Pride Weekend. Not that I would know about such matters.

Lauren is off to a church sleepover directly after school, so she's out until tomorrow sometime. Tonight is date night (woot! (Don't ya' hate when grown people say woot?)), then Jeff is off to BFE, West Texas for the weekend. There's a rocket launch. What a poignant salute to Geek Pride Weekend.

Me? I'm listening to music at decibel levels likely to bring my neighbor over here. For a stern chat... or a dance. Can you imagine Deanne and I on the porch, poppin' and lockin' to "Boom Boom Pow?" *snort*

I have bedding to shop for over the weekend. My aunt and cousin are coming in 10 days, and the comforter in the guest room is really showing its age. Gotta find something beachy. That means cabana stripes, not sandcastles and seashells.

I charged Jeff's Bday gift on the card he frequently looks at online, at a store that completely identifies the gift. And the charge is right there on the home page. Argh. Better call and tell him not to look.

Happy Friday, all!

American Idol Finale and More Stuff

Kriiiiiissssssss!!!!! Woo!! I didn't care as much who won the final this season, but it's very cool that he won. The voice is there. Now he needs to work on the confidence. I'll totally buy his CD. Adam will have a fantastic career either way.

Bikini Girl and Kara... OMG. I about fell out of my chair! How awesome was that?! Best moment of the season. I love that she is so embarrassed about the bikini, but she did it for charity. Hilarious.

David Cook was wonderful, and I don't know how he made it through the song without crying. Danny was great, too. It should have been Danny and Kris in the final. Nah, then I really wouldn't have known who to go for.

"Glee" had its sneak preview on Tuesday night. I wanted to love it, but it was quite boring. I liked the musical numbers, but the voices and mouths were not synced, which drives me up a wall. The editing on those was just terrible. Instead of editing together various takes, can't they just perform the song and tape it in one take? The funny parts were few and far between. I'll give it another chance when it starts up this summer, but I'm not anticipating much.

AI Finals 'n Stuff

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

So. The HEB Coca-Cola guy and I have "thing." Yep. He's been in the soda aisle at the same time as me every single week for forever. We always say hi and sometimes he gets my soda for me, even if it isn't a Coke product. Very nice! This week, he saw me in the bread aisle on his way to the sodas and stopped to ask how I was. Since we've now chatted outside the soda aisle, I'm calling it a "thing." Anything to make the grocery shopping experience more interesting...

I shouldn't joke about it. One of the neighborhood hussies moms left her hubby for a produce guy a couple of years ago. Oh the drama of the stay-at-home crowd. Bet you thought we were boring.

American Idol has come down to the better voice vs. the better performer. Charisma is important, but at the cost of the voice? I don't know. I merely point out questions. :) I don't like when Adam screams for an extended period of time. One shriek is great. The falsetto- also good now and then, but a whole song is too much. I like Adam as a person. He seems to be really nice and not stuck on himself. I also like his stage persona, the eyeliner, nail polish, etc. It's just his voice I'm not a fan of.

So I think it was close, but I voted for Kris. The winner is not all that important anymore, since we all know several of them will get contracts. Lots of Danny fans were there last night. It was awesome that they cheered so loud when he appeared on the screen in the audience. Woohoo!

Yeah, Kris totally bombed the Idol song. Why didn't they change the key? Eh. He should have nailed it. Adam took the tame and cliche song and tried to make it "out there." Blah. I'm guessing he will win though. And we'll hear him screaming lyrics of rainbows and mountains and unicorns for the next several months. For me, enjoying Adam means watching the performance and the drama. Hearing him on radio won't do anything for me.

We'll see though! Anything can happen. I'm waiting for the Daughtry tour. WOOOO!!!!

We're Not Gonna Pay Reeeeeeeeent

Monday, May 18, 2009

Ohhhhhhh, Rockets. Nothing was going into the hoop yesterday. Nothing. 'Twas a sorry sight. But they still did well this past week.

RENT was wonderful!! We played a lot of musical chairs. Jeff was sick this weekend, and couldn't go, so Lauren invited Jaxon. Then right before the show, Tracy's daughter decided not to go (prom hangover, not the alcohol kind, but the soooooo tired kind) and she gave me her ticket in the 4th row. (We are second mezz.) So about 15 minutes before we left the house, Jaxon's mom ended up taking my ticket.

Then... through the first act, there were 3 open seats next to us in 4th row. So at intermission, I got the three of them to come down from the rafters and take those seats for the second act. Woohoo! So yeah, Tracy rocks.

The show is flippin' amazing. There were Rentheads galore! Lots of cheering for as certain songs approached, etc. Crazy energy from the audience. The only complaint I had was MiMi, whose voice is great but didn't quite have the excitement of the original character. Angel was good, but not quiiiiite as good as the Angels I've seen. No one can top Jai Rodriguez, I think. The one in the movie was awesome, too.

Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal are perfect in their roles. Can't get better than the original, although Joey Fatone was an excellent Mark.

Game time 2:30 CST. Then seeing Adam and Anthony in Rent tonight. Yaaaaay!

Saturday 9: Do You Think I'm Sexy?

1. Who do you think is sexy?
Other than Jeff, Colin Farrell.

2. When does it become love?
When you know the person well enough to care deeper than "dang you look hot in that shirt."

3. Are you a good dancer?
Yep.

4. What magazines do you read?
Real Simple and Consumer Reports.

5. If you could have any name, what would you call yourself?
I don't know specifically, but something romantic and interesting, with at least four syllables.

6. Have you ever ridden in a limo? If yes, when?
Once on a business trip to Indianapolis. One time in Orlando at CFTC, going clubbing with the fangirls. Then at CFTC in Miami, we got a limo bus for the night. It had a dance floor. Very cool. For Christmas Dance my junior year of high school, my boyfriend's dad wore a chauffeur 's hat and drove us around in his car. That was pretty awesome, too.

7. What is something you really like to do?
Interior design and decor. Not professionally. Just in my spare time, for my own home. I like the planning and choosing and getting to live in the result every day.

8. Last chance: Who wins Idol, Kris Allen or Adam Lambert?
Kris. And his "cheese dip." lol. CHEESE DIP?! Git a rope.

9. If you had to, what animal would you choose to be?
A domestic cat. That is the life.

A Big Ding Dong

Friday, May 15, 2009

On AI this week, when Danny was voted off, in all the chaos Simon said, "Next week's final will be a big ding dong." We laughed. Ryan asked for clarification, but didn't get any. I figured it was some common English phrase, but couldn't decide whether he meant a good contest or a runaway win for Adam.

One of my friends in England told me that he thought "a big ding dong" is a real fight. That made sense with Simon's mention of no disrespect to Danny. (Awwww, Danny!) I initially thought he was saying no disrespect to Kris, so it was quite confusing.

Later, I found a whole article on the subject. lol.

I'm going for Kris. I just like his singing style better. He has a much better voice and a more "pop" vibe. Adam is an awesome performer. He has a good voice, but while my daughter would love to see an Adam concert, I would not. I would love to see Kris at Stubb's, ya' know?

And.... YAY ROCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!! Sunday, Game 7 at Staples. Now that will be a big ding dong.

AI and Facebook Chat

I SO called Kris and Adam as the top two on May 2, thankyouverymuch. And it was a huge surprise, so... go me! Usually my favorite is gone by the top 4 or 5, so this is a weird year. Danny was my original fave, and I am sorry to see him go. Between Adam and Kris, Adam is by far the better performer, but Kris has the better voice, in my opinion. But Simon, please tell us, what the heck is "a big ding dong?"

So, I saw this on James' Facebook:

"In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made school boards."
-Mark Twain, 1897

LOL. Gotta love it.

Also on Facebook, I have not been on chat since waaaaaaay back, because frankly, I can't chat with 20 friends at once. Twenty people in a single chat room, yes. Twenty people all in different windows, no. There was no way to only be visible to certain people, so I just turned it off.

Finally they have added a feature that lets you set up a specific list of people you want to see and to have see you when you are online. It took me a few minutes to figure out what the heck to do to get it to work, so here is some help, should anyone need it:

1) Set up a friend list of people to whom you wish to be visible when you are online for FB chat. This can be done in the left sidebar of the friends page. Or you can use your existing lists- school, work, family, whatever... if those work for you.
2) Click chat at the bottom right corner of the FB screen.
3) When it comes up, click "Friend Lists" and uncheck any groups you don't want to show in chat.
4) Click the green button to the right of "Other friends" in the available list, to show as offline to them. (Not sure why they come up. All my friends are in at least one list, and those are either checked or not.)

Celebrity Apprentice and This or That

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

I had no idea before Celebrity Apprentice that Melissa and Joan Rivers are absolute shrews. Joan did not deserve to win by any stretch of the imagination. She didn't do well through the season and she didn't contribute much to most tasks, and lucked out on winning 3 of 5 criteria on the final project. She acted like she didn't have anything to do with the event planners quitting. Such a liar. The off the charts, crazy rage she has towards Annie is ludicrous. She needs to take a pill.

Hi Laura

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

She loves when I write about her, so here you go...

So Laura's ex-bf is in town. Mwahahahaha! They talked ("argued politics") for quite a while yesterday and now she is trying to avoid him until he leaves on Thursday. Can she do it? I told her to tell him she has swine flu. She said, "That would be perfect, because I am Mexican, you know." LOL. Sometimes we forget. Until she says a word like piñata and busts out the accent for three syllables.

So I am waiting... for him to show up at her house. He invited her and Rich to dinner, but she declined. I would sooooo just happen to be there if they went out. I told her to let me know if she changed her mind.

Wild Basin and Rosie's

I've been meaning to go to Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve for years and years, and finally we made it out there yesterday! It is very cool. We hiked down to the falls (a trickle this weekend) and along Bee Creek, then back up. These are what I would call "easy" trails, which is fine in my book. It does have a fairly steep incline in some areas, but not anything like Enchanted Rock. The trails are all well-maintained, with mostly steps dug out along the steep areas.

We didn't see any wildlife. I'm OK with that. Just being among the trees and by a stream is enough for me to connect with nature. I don't need to meet a snake or raccoon to make me feel like I've bonded with Mother Earth. There were plenty of birds.

I had read that there are not usually a lot of people at Wild Basin. That was our experience. Good thing, because there isn't much parking. Hikers complain that you can hear the traffic from 360- which you can from the western parts of the trail- but to me that is just a clue of where to go, should I get lost.

It was 96 degrees and sunny, but in the trees, it is shady most of the way. There was also a breeze at the higher elevations. Very nice. There are plenty of options for hiking, some as short as maybe 15 minutes round trip. We spent about an hour and a half walking most of the area, about 2 miles total. There is one other trail which we didn't take this time, that misses the creek and would have added about .6 miles.

Definitely hit this one if you are looking for a fun hike some afternoon!

Also wanted to mention Rosie's Tamale House, where Jeff and I had dinner on Saturday night. It was fajita night (Tuesdays and Saturdays) and the fajitas were simply amazing. The tortillas were slightly crispy and SO good, and the steak was melt-in-your-mouth tender. Jeff had chicken and said it was wonderful as well. I'm going to say these are at least as good, if not better than the Hyatt's fajitas. And of course the price is a whole lot better.

S-s-s-Saturday Niiii-iiiight

Saturday, May 9, 2009

Erm... Saturday mornin', but I mentioned the Bay City Rollers in conversation Thursday and it's stuck with me. How did that happen? Jeff's friend Stu went to a Grateful Dead concert Thursday night, while we were at the very first showing of Star Trek, at the Bullock Museum. (The film is flippin' AWESOME. You have to see it!) While we were in line waiting to enter the theater, Jeff was texting him and Lauren asked what kind of music they play. Jeff said they were acid rock. Jeff: not into music. So I explained they were more like folk rock. Then I said, joking, "Like... the Bay City Rollers." Random, but it made me and some UT guys behind us laugh. Ever since that moment, I've had "Saturday Night" stuck in my head. I deserve that.

Jeff is at a launch today. Lauren is hanging out at the boyfriend's house. I'm importing CDs into iTunes. Yeah, somehow I never got around to putting them in. I just read all the music I had on the computer at the time, and started buying stuff at the iTunes store. Now I am finally sucking it up and sitting here babysitting while it imports. If I weren't being selective about which songs I want, I would pay Lauren to do it for me. It takes fooooooorrrrrrrrevvvvvvvvverrrrrrrr. I only have about 150 CDs to go now...

Watched the Dateline on infidelity last night. Jeff once said, when we'd barely been married a year, I could catch him in the very act of cheating and he would deny it. I think that is almost every guy. On the show, this dude's wife found a love note from the girlfriend, and he denied it. Then the wife took the other woman out to coffee, and they chatted about the affair. He was still denying it. Then on the show, he failed a lie detector test. So weird. Give it up. You're caught, buddy. At least come clean so you can move on, one way or another.

S-A! T-U-R! D-A-Y!...

About Us: Part V- The Final Chapter

Friday, May 8, 2009

Jeff moved to Austin after grad.

That summer, I went on a business trip with him to San Francisco. It was amazing. Our first big trip alone. We drove down the coast to Monterey on the weekend.

While I went to graduate school at A&M, we saw each other on weekends. After a couple of months, we could both make the trip from College Station to Austin and back with our eyes closed. I was spending my free time planning my Austin wedding. SO FUN. My apartment was filled with bridal magazines.

We did all the regular pre-wedding "stuff." We went to a church-based engaged couples retreat, which was a blast. We also did pre-wedding counseling with my father-in-law's friend who would be officiating our wedding. I dragged Jeff to a few wedding shows, where you try cakes and look at honeymoon locales, etc. We registered for a bunch of formal entertaining stuff that we would hardly ever use.

The pastor's counseling included a personality test that very accurately predicted how we would interact as a married couple. I would highly recommend that. (Whatever it was. Helpful, eh?) Evidently, we are both strong, independent personalities who engage in power struggles. Yep. Luckily, we also tested to be and have shown we are usually in complete agreement on the big life issues like finances. Very interesting test.

The wedding day was fantasmic. So many of our college friends made the trip from the various places they were at the time. We had our reception at the Hyatt on Town Lake, and our extended families stayed the weekend. My parents hung out together all weekend, which made things especially great for me. A very very happy event!

Prologue:

I moved to Austin and got a job. A few years later we had Lauren- super-easily, I have to add. :)

We'll be married 19 years on May 26!

About Us: Part IV - Sick

Thursday, May 7, 2009

...I still remember what I was wearing that random night at the Chicken. White denim mini skirt and a navy blue top. Yep. I should have worn that outfit every time I went out.

So, where were we? Ahh yes.

My mom wasn't able to be with me at the hospital because of her physical disabilities at the time, so I was alone there. It kills me to think back how bad she felt about it, but it was what it was.

In order to do the remarkable things they do at MD Anderson, the system simply must be a ginormous, well-oiled machine. The staff are amazing and very compassionate, but you are a number (I still remember mine) and the processes are fast and mechanical. Pick up your orders here, go there, do this, move to the next place, do that... I had biopsies, blood tests, doctor visits, team meetings, diagnostic tests and a million other things, all queued up and printed from a computer for me each day. It is the most overwhelming thing you would ever do, especially by yourself, and on top of all that, you're newly adjusting to the idea that your life may just be... well... over. I kept going and didn't dare stop to take a breath.

Day 3 of the MD Anderson Experience, Jeff showed up at the hospital. At the time, I was about to have a bone marrow biopsy, one of medicine's most painful procedures. It was then that I finally took a moment to have a complete emotional breakdown. Lucky him, eh? He had brought me a big stuffed bear, which I held tight all afternoon.

I was in Houston a lot from November through April, doing the chemo/radiation thing. If I was there over a weekend, Jeff usually came down. Otherwise I was in College Station, going to classes and trying to maintain some semblance of normal student life.

During those months, I was very ill from treatment, with everything from radiation burns in my throat and on my skin, to terrible pain in my arms as a side effect of one of my meds, to tossing my cookies every couple of hours for weeks on end. When I was at school, he was there for me, to do whatever needed doing. He cooked a gajillion bowls of rice, when that was all I could keep down for two months. I was a fixture at his apartment, and his roommate, a great friend and a stellar human being, was a sweetheart to put up with me as well.

Around March, Jeff and I, two very logically-minded engineering majors, had a pragmatic discussion about our post-college dating scenarios. It would soon be decision time, because he was leaving College Station to work and I was likely headed to grad school. We knew we were either in a good place to make a commitment or we should just go our separate ways. A long-distance relationship at that point just wouldn't make sense.

We discussed every sticky detail. Were our rekindled feelings brought about by my medical situation, and his feeling needed and my feeling like I needed someone? My experimental treatment was supposed to mean I would be able to have kids, but there were no guarantees. Would that be something he wanted to deal with? We talked about where we would live and if our future plans could coexist, because my job opportunities would likely be out-of-state and he was headed to Austin. I also made up my mind not to make any commitments before being declared cancer-free.

In May, when I was officially in remission, we had another chat- kind of a "So, should we get married or what?" sort of deal. The last thing either of us wanted at that time was to stop seeing each other. We planned a wedding date in a year, when I would be finished with my Master's degree. Not that I didn't get a big, romantic "Will you marry me?" We faked a proposal at a club where he gave me my ring. No free drinks out of it, but the cocktail waitress and bartender were excited. I was pretty excited, too...

About Us: Part III - The Break Up

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

...We returned to College Station after junior year Christmas Break the day before school began, and Jeff invited me to his place. To break up with me. He had gone out with someone at home over the holidays (mm hmm), and realized he just didn't want to have a girlfriend anymore. Or whatever. You know how these things go. It really, really sucked, because I was completely unprepared. Usually you have a clue it's coming, but to me, it was totally out of the blue.

Jeff and I had Personal Finance AND Thermodynamics together that semester. BLAH. Couldn't he have broken up with me when we were making our schedules? Worse yet, in some sort of twisted display of feigned maturity, we decided to sit together in Finance- he, Stephen and I. That led to a few very ill-fated "dates with the ex." Not smart on my part. I was just hoping he would realize what a huge mistake he'd made. Yes, my wise friends insisted I pull my dang head out.

I did go out with a few guys that semester. Around May, I started seeing John, with whom I was working in the Deans' office. He had another girl he dated back home in Waco, so while we were not totally exclusive, we were inseparable in College Station. We both worked and took classes that summer, so I was at school rather than at home in Houston.

One summer weekend, when John was in Waco and I was at the Dixie Chicken with girlfriends, Jeff randomly appeared. He was visiting from Dallas and playing pool with his buddies.

Our interaction began with silly, across-the-room smiles. At some point I made my way to the pool tables. The flirting got increasingly intense, each of us sort of daring the other to take it one more level and one more level. Eventually, we ditched the friends.

The next day, he went home to Dallas and I returned to my regular life. There was no talk of getting back together, on either of our parts. I think we wrote each other one back-and-forth note to say "It was fun. Glad we got to resolve things..."

Soon after that, John and I amicably ended whatever it was we were doing, and I was back into "playing the field" mode. In August, I began my senior year. WHOOP! Senior fall was great. And I wasn't crossing paths with Jeff anymore. He was off my radar completely.

Then, on November 8, I was diagnosed with cancer. I was immediately sent to MD Anderson in Houston to have staging tests, and I cannot for the life of me remember how Jeff even knew. Someone (maybe I?? I really don't have a clue...) must have called him.

About Us: Part II- Meet the Parents

Monday, May 4, 2009

...We had Electrical Engineering 214 (a.k.a. "Cowboy Double-E," for those playing along at home) together spring semester. I sat with Jeff and our mutual friends. I was the 4.0 Kid before EE214. One would think I was playing dumb to get the boys to "help me" with it, but it was not a play. I was honestly not getting it. But my dumb-assery did get me a lot of time with Jeff and his buddies.

Within the first few weeks, he asked me to the Baylor basketball game and I think it was Steve and Susan we doubled with. We had dinner out first. I talked WAY too much. I was very nervous until we got to the game. This is the infamous game where I accidentally wore my bright, Baylor yellow sweater. Yeah, baby. They gave me so much grief about it. Deserved, but still.

The next day I was out with my buddy Bob and going on and on about Jeff. I called Jeff from wherever Bob and I were and asked him out for ice cream that night. That was like a Wednesday. We talked a lot on the phone and Friday we had our third date. We were pretty much "going out" at that point.

A couple of weeks later, Jeff was going home to Dallas for the weekend. He asked if I wanted to go with him. It was great, other than during dinner, when I accidentally spit a grape onto the table. OY. Later, he said he couldn't believe I went home with him since we had just started dating. He had only asked because he thought he should, never expecting me to say yes. I hadn't thought of it like "meeting the parents" at all. I was just thinking how much I would miss him for a WHOLE ENTIRE WEEKEND.

Dated through spring, and that summer we visited each other between Dallas and Houston. We wrote letters almost every day while we were apart. I still have his. Mine evidently went in the round file. (Don't boys keep anything?)

Dated through fall... Jeff had a motorcycle and it was fantastic to have the bike for football games, for close parking. We rode out to Huntsville once in shorts and tshirts. I always say, had we crashed, we would have been two helmeted, disembodied heads in the road.

Then Christmas break came around again, and our relationship was about to take an unexpected nosedive.

Adam Cook :(

Sunday, May 3, 2009

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adam Cook, the eldest brother of "American Idol" winner David Cook, has died from brain cancer. He was 37.

David Cook announced the Saturday death at the 12th annual Race for Hope 5K in Washington, D.C., where he was serving as grand marshal. The singer says the cause of death was a brain tumor.

Adam Cook was a lawyer from Terre Haute, Ind., who battled cancer for more than a decade. He famously cheered for his singing sibling in the audience of the popular Fox signing competition's seventh season in 2008.

Julie Henricks, a friend of the Cook family, said Adam Cook died at his Terre Haute home, where hospice nurses were helping Cook's wife, Kendra, care for him.

Henricks said she received a text message Saturday night from Kendra Cook saying that the family had gathered for a bedside vigil as Adam's condition worsened.

She said Adam Cook, an attorney also survived by the couple's 7-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, had decided to stop his chemotherapy treatments early this year after they failed to help his advanced brain cancer.

"He was so sick and so worn out he just made that decision. That was his choice. It was because he was just so tired," said Henricks.

Adam is the eldest of Cook's brothers. A younger sibling, Andrew, also tried out for the show but didn't make it to Hollywood.

About Us: Part I- All About the Hair

Alright. Let's do this thing.

My very first memory of Jeff was seeing him in Physics. My friend Lisa and I had Calculus and Physics together, along with Jeff. Jeff was friends with a couple of guys I knew, and they sat right in front of us in Physics class. I'm really into good hair on guys, and Jeff had great hair. Brown (No, not blonde, honey.) and thick and wavy. He was cute and horsed around with the guys a lot. Lisa and I would occasionally barge into their conversation from behind them, if we found it particularly entertaining.

It wasn't until cool weather set in that I really noticed the full extent of Jeff's awesomeness. One day, the whole row of guys wore sweaters. Lisa and I took it upon ourselves to quietly judge who had the best sweater. In the end, Jeff won, not just because of the sweater, but he had fantastic shoulders. I added in that Jeff got bonus points on top of his amazing, winning sweater/shoulders because of the great hair. Then I pretended to reach up and run my fingers through his hair. Lisa was totally OMG, you cannot do that!

For the next several classes I would always, at some point during physics, reach up and pretend to run my fingers through his hair and she would tell me to stop it. lol. I was always afraid he or one of the other guys would see me, or worse yet, that I might actually TOUCH HIS HAIR. Holy tap dancin' Moses. That would have been truly tragic.

I started hanging out near the Calculus door after class, since he didn't sit near us there. I would smile and he would sometimes smile back. He was utterly oblivious. I don't think he ever even said hello to me at Calculus. What a dork. (This is where Jeff would chime in that he totally noticed me and it was I who wouldn't talk to him at Calculus. No no no. I was almost late to my next class sometimes waiting to see him come out.)

So the last week of the semester, he says to me in Physics, "Do you want to come over and study for the final?" I was cool. "Sure." And we had a date. Or so I thought.

The day we were supposed to get together, he calls me. "Everyone's meeting here at 7."

Everyone? I went into panic mode. I called Lisa and asked her to come with me, so it wouldn't look like I had thought it was a one-on-one study date. She had other plans, but I literally begged her, so she went with me to Jeff's apartment.

When we got there, it was just Jeff. (He later told me he only said other people were coming in case I didn't want it to be a "date. ")

So the three of us studied. Poor Lisa. I apologized a thousand times to her afterward.

Then it was Christmas break.
