Carbon Footprint and Powers of Persuasion

Friday, October 31, 2008

L had to calculate our carbon footprint for homework. Ours is 52 tons. That's good compared to the national average for a 3-person household -- 80 tons. Not so good compared to the world average of 17 tons.

Despite Jeff trying to convince his brother that Facebook is a waste of time, and trying to convince me that Steven would never join, I convinced Steven to join. Go me!!

The radio station is doing a thing where they'll donate $10,000 to the charity of the biggest celebrity someone can convince to do an interview with the show. They talked about Jenny McCarthy and some NASCAR guy, but I think I will use my previously described powers of persuasion and go straight for George Clooney. It's all for the charity, of course.

Happy happy Halloweeeeeeeeen! And remember... demons are a ghoul's best friend. :D

What Were You Thinking

Thursday, October 30, 2008

The Daily Meme asks on its "lost meme" page...
What were you thinking when you first met your current significant other?
I was thinking, DANG I would love to run my fingers through that guy's hair. Matter-of-fact, I told my friend that I wanted to. Then every day he sat in front of us in class, I would act like I was going to just do it, and she and I would giggle. Can't imagine it would have gone over well if I had actually done it. lol.

Speaking of Jeff- he is home from California. It's been so long since he went on a business trip, that he actually enjoyed it!

I'm not doing the Halloween thang this year, for the first time since Lauren was born. I'm taking the kids to the Carrie Underwood concert Friday night. We'll totally miss the Halloween festivities from beginning to end... well as long as we steer clear of 6th Street on our way home.

TMZ has Adrian Grenier on all the time looking like a brainless dope. I watch and laugh and think, yeah... but he is so hot that I couldn't care less. Just keep on showing him, guys.

Library and stuff

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

I'm going to start volunteering in the elementary school library again. I really enjoyed it when I did it before. Turns out the librarian needs the help. Yay!

Coming up on the next Foundation event. We start making table decorations next week. The soirée is at the UT Alumni Center, which I hear from everyone is an incredible venue. Best part? Volunteers get designated parking! Parking is always a nightmare when we go to campus.

I can't convince Lauren to go to Bowie City Limits this weekend. Oh well... I'll have to see who else is going!

Take a Poll...

...and... never mind... :D

Sunday I got to take a Gallup poll. It took forever, but they covered every little thing about the presidential election. I gave the guy every bit of info about me and who I am voting for, what issues are important to me, even a few things about Congressional elections. Interesting! Now I'm waiting to see when the next poll results come out.

Guitar Hero World Tour is such fun! I love the music on this one- well, most of the music. There are some real loser songs, too. We got a code to unlock all the songs, for pre-ordering the game, but the code doesn't work. Bleh. So I'm unlocking them in traditional fashion.

I love that the battles don't have the zapper thingies, but are just a "can you keep up with so-and-so" kind of thing. Much more fun.

Haven't played drums yet, but Lauren reports that they have to be hit harder than the old Rock Band drums, probably because of the rubbery sound-dampening surface. The tapping is still too loud, IMO.

This morning Diane Sawyer was talking about a house from the 1920's, saying "I am going to channel my inner flapper." Lauren, who doesn't know what a flapper is, just said, "Ewww." Ahaha. It does sound kinda icky.

Stolen from Sunday Stealing

1. Do you believe in seeing a rainbow after the rain?

10. What emotion do you like to show?
Supportiveness.

Anderson Cooper. He comes from a family where he could have sat back and lived on a trust fund his whole life, and instead he went out and got his degree and learned several languages and got in the trenches with folks around the world to try to make their lives better. Just one of the most brilliant, witty, worldly people I've seen.

13. Who did you last chat with in a chat room?
A bunch of very fun NSYNC fans, several years ago.

14. What kind of person do you think the one we stole this meme from is?

Just about everyone in my life. I'm drawn to people who have a great sense of humor.

29. What was the worst idea you've had this week?
To have a chocolate martini after a couple of Bahama Mamas. Egads. What a disaster.

30. Do you speak another language other than English?
I do not, much to my oma's chagrin.

Last night's Liquor Qlub theme was "Bahama Mamas." Kathy made a trip to Spec's and got the appropriate glassware, paper parasols, maraschino cherries, cocktail picks, top shelf alcohol and some fancy herbed havarti cheese. When she hit the checkout, she was shocked at the total, but shrugged and paid it. I get that same feeling every time I'm checking out at Target.

Kath has a waterfall from her hot tub into her pool. The sound of the flowing water is so relaxing. Very nice.

Hot topic of the evening was exes. Lesson learned: Never piss Cindy off. LOL.

LOL for Saturday Morning

Saturday, October 25, 2008

But first--- CONGRATS to Lauren who not only made straight A's on her first high school six weeks report card, but also just made 1st band for concert season!!!!!! WOOOOO!!

So. Earlier this week, Lauren wrote a bio of my mom for Spanish. She wanted to say that Grandma won an award- Homemaker of the Year- from the Young Homemakers Association, a group in which she was quite active when I was little. Like South Austin Mothers Club, but with cooking and cleaning seminars thrown in.

So I was on the laptop at the time and I looked up "homemaker" online for her. It said this:

ama (f) de la casa

which I erroneously read as simply "ama."

She writes "ama del año" and moves on. In a few minutes, she says she doesn't think that is correct. She gets on the computer to look up "ama del año" to check the translation, only she types "ama del ano" because she doesn't know how to do the ñ.

It returns------ "loves the anus."

We giggled about that for days! Incidentally, Mom would have thought this story was freakin' hilarious. :)

So, for those of you who haven't advanced beyond The One Semester of Spanish Spanish Love Song, the correct translation of Homemaker of the Year is "ama de la casa del año."

Um... is there a way that Facebook can allow me to adjust the placement of a friend's profile photo thumbnail image if they've left it at the default and people can only see the corner of their face? (Whoops, I just lost Laura with all my "technical jargon.") That is surprisingly distracting to me. :)

::Just checking in::

Just-- the Cell Phone? ...and no land line? How does it pencil out for you: do you need to have both a cell phone and a home phone in your life? How about down the road? Do you see yourself disconnecting from the hard-wired connection?

I'm a person who lets her cell phone die at least once a week. Not too hooked into my cell phone really. I do see land lines becoming a thing of the past at some point. Right now the 911 issue is still a problem.

Checking-- accounts, a thing of the past or something that will be around for a while? I'm wondering how much we're coming around to debit cards and online payments...

I hope checking accounts become completely electronic. No more trips to the bank.

In-- the same vein: how about the net itself? If you're on it for basic communications then what happens when your handheld device becomes your email/chat/and voice communication system? Do you bail from the hardwired home links when wifi becomes just a little more ubiquitous? ...and before you answer, check in with any teen you see walking down the street with their head in the Net!

WHAT?! Here as with my old Palm Pilot, I can't stand that tiny screen when I can get a full-screen experience from my PC. And the thumb cramps from the tiny keyboard... In a pinch, or when I'm out, sure.

I Voted!

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Did you? The lines were not too long at my early voting place.

Big drama though. When I typed my code into the voting machine, it said my number was invalid. When I checked with the clerk, he called another guy who called another guy, who checked and said the computer said I had already voted. I was like, noooooo.

So that guy calls another woman in and she gets on the phone with the "downtown" people to ask if I can be given a new number. Meanwhile, I ask, "Do I have to vote on this side of the table? I went to the other side, because this side was full." Everyone says, "Ahhhhh! YES. You have to vote on this side." Simple problem fixed.

Thank goodness, because if I didn't get my vote, I was going to take it all the way to wherever that type of stuff has to go all the way to. In your average election, eh. But this one?

I have Laura's Facebook password. I am using it to make her check it now and then, under the threat of my doing something very silly to her facebook. Notice, I haven't changed the password, because I am nice like that. (Scotty, that's a point for me. Right? :D) Do I think she will change it herself? Nah. She won't take the time to figure out how to do it.

I made couscous for the first time ever this weekend. None of us has eaten it before. Can you believe that? It's good, but it's strange to eat. All those tiny balls of pasta. So... tiny. And it's difficult to swallow them all, like the orange roe on the outside of sushi rolls.

Dylan got his learner's permit this week and drove Lauren around yesterday, with a parent of course. He'll have his license in May. Lauren is on Unit 3 of the driving course, and still anticipating getting her permit the week of her bday in November.

The Ags looked really good the first half of yesterday's Tech game! It was a great game, for the most part. Tannehill rocks.

My friends, I have returned to the Chi. Laura doesn't like the curls, so it's back to the straight hair. Darn. Just when I began to love them... not really...

So I'm Chi-ing, but at a lower setting, and with more product than I used to use. This morning Kimberly emails me, "LOVE the curls!" Oy.

Friday 5 (from the archives)

1. When you go to the beach, lake, or pool, are you more likely to lower yourself gradually into cold water or to take a determined plunge and get it over with?
Gradual. I know it isn't logical, but I can't psych myself out enough to dive in.

2. How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other tasks or ordeals?
Very much like my approach to other things. I'm pretty cautious when taking on tasks. I like to do my research and consider all the angles.

3. When someone gives you flowers, are you more likely to let them turn completely brown and gross before throwing them out, or to discard them the moment they take on that sick-flower look?
Discard the minute they look sick. It's just sad to look at sickly flowers.

4. How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other gifts, purchases, or relationships?
Very unlike my approach to relationships, but much like my approach to purchases. I do tend to get something new when an item is showing its wear or starting to give me trouble. With relationships, I'm usually the "hang in there and work it out" person.

5. Think of your favorite movie. Some people say that the reasons you love your favorite movie are related to what you value in romantic relationships. How is this true or untrue in your case?
I'll go with Love Actually. It is true that it represents what I value in romantic relationships. The movie delves into all different forms of love. I think in romantic relationships, it is vital that both people experience the various facets of love for each other, including passion, companionship, family bonds, etc.

Third Debate

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Omg. I watched it, and I swore I wouldn't. I just can't turn away.

The pundits talked about Joe the Plumber as if he represents the average American. Remember- Joe the Plumber is a person purchasing a small business. He's got more money than the average guy. They think this man will be some centerpiece of the remainder of the campaign. Let's hope not.

McCain really zinged Obama with the "If you wanted to run against George Bush..." line. Too bad they didn't come up with that one a month ago.

A Republican Party lady called yesterday to ask if we'd put a McCain sign in our yard. I politely said, "No thanks." Jeff thinks we should put a McCain and an Obama sign in our yard and let the neighbors wonder which of us is for whom. LOL

Curious as a Cat

1) What would you do if (or What will you do because) your workplace was (is) closed today and you could (can) do anything you wanted?

My "workplace" is open every day. Hehe. Matter-of-fact, since Lauren is home from school, I'm doing double-duty as webmistress and mommy. If I could do anything I wanted today, I would go to Sea World.

2) Have you ever been emotionally attached to someone in a way that was detrimental to you?
I dated a guy long ago who was bad for me in all sorts of ways. For the first six months or so, he was great, but I should have gotten out when things started going downhill. I didn't, and subsequently wasted several months that, looking back, I could have been thriving without him around. My advice, girls- there are too many guys in the world to waste your time with a creep.

3) What is the most beautiful word you know, in any language?
If we're talking about the sound of it... "efflorescence"

4) What one thing limits your freedom the most?
Gas prices.

5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

This reminds me of a trip we took to Wisconsin to visit my mom's side of the family when I was 8. We stayed at a lake house and I went fishing with my dad one day.

A&M/UT Football Rivalry

Sunday, October 12, 2008

Friday night, we were discussing college football. Julie, who is currently getting her PhD at UT, said that she supports A&M in all games other than the UT game. Scott's comment- "Don't tell anyone that." lol.

There were variations on that sentiment, including Jeff's idea that he should support UT in any non-conference game, as a rep of the Big 12. He also supports them in the OU game each year, as more of a Texas vs. Oklahoma, state thing.

I think Jeff's opinion sounds reasonable, but just so everyone knows, I do not support my school's rival in any game. In matters of academics, I support UT 100%. It's a top-notch university and I am happy to live down the road from it. Football is just sacred. Let's say... I am honestly happy that my Longhorn friends are happy after yesterday's game. :)

Best thing about UT football is that I can go all over town during games and there is NO ONE anywhere. We went to Mt. Bonnell yesterday. It's such a beautiful view. And a great place to make out... as I recall...

We saw Dave Attell last night. He was very funny, even though he seemed to lose track of what he was saying now and then. And the last rambling, weird joke of the night fell flat. Still a hilarious show!

I have been accused of taking Laura's story and posting it as my own. So, I hereby announce that Laura told me about the AC360 exchange between Jeffrey "Hot Stuff" Toobin and Anderson "I Won't Do that Ass Exercise on Regis and Kelly" Cooper. Since I introduced her to the hotness that is AC, she has watched his show religiously, and I do not. Matter-of-fact, her love for him has surpassed my own, and evolved into serious discussion of road trips when he is in Crawford. Me? I'd rather drive to the coast in a hurricane when he's got that wet CNN baseball cap on...

...Um... What was I talking about?...

Yeah, so despite the fact that it took me ten minutes to locate that video on youtube because of its obscure keywords, and that I spent another ten minutes dorking around on Anderson's blog because he had still photos of Jeff's screen and then I got distracted, let it be known that it was Laura, and not I, who saw the original phone call as it was happening.

Debate

Friday, October 3, 2008

I'm glad to hear everyone thought of me when Palin started saying "nuke-u-lar." And no, I cannot continue hearing that on my evening news for the next four years. So please, if McCain wins, someone up there tell her how to say it correctly. I. Beseech. You.

My big comment this week was that I wondered what would happen at the debate if Sarah Palin started crying. I wasn't making a joke. I seriously think that was a risk, considering her nervous performance in the Couric interview. Who knew BIDEN would be the one to cry? ;) Unfortunately, while I have great sympathy for his loss, that moment also served to remind me of his egregious lie over the last few decades that his wife and child were "killed by a drunk driver." Don't get me started on what I think about that.

Sarah Palin avoided questions early on (hello- "mortgage crisis" does not mean "energy"), but was finally answering later. Her biggest mistake was that when she turned to her talking points, she always used the same verbiage. Biden is experienced enough to repeat talking points using different phrases that you might not recognize as being the same as what you just heard. She also drifted occasionally into that Palin-speak where she strings random political words into long, nonsensical sentences when she doesn't have a clue.

Two things I learned about Obama/Biden:
1) they are against gay marriage- WHAT?! Wow. I had no idea. That's neither Democratic nor progressive.
2) they support reducing principal on loans for people who aren't paying- Oh heck no. I can get behind refinancing for those people to a lower interest rate. But paying off part of their loan? That is completely unreasonable. If they do that, they had better pay off twice as much on the loans of people who successfully manage their debt.

Two things I learned about Governor Palin:
1) When she's trying to appeal to the American People, all her -ing words end in -in'.
2) She considers her family to be middle-class. Hmm.
