Woolly Worm!
Sunday, June 29, 2008
Saw a woolly worm this morning! That always reminds me of visiting my grandparents in College Station when I was growing up. They were everywhere there.
The true woolly bear caterpillar or "woolly worm" is a larval form of the tiger moth. It has an orange band around its middle. This one was all-black (Ecpantheria scribonia) and is the larval form of the giant leopard moth, with black circles on white wings. A note- it is best not to handle hairy caterpillars, as some can cause skin reactions.
And that's your science lesson of the day!
