Friday Tipping Tips

Friday, September 10, 2010

On restaurant tipping, from this article:

The appropriate tip is 20%...
That’s what chefs leave when they eat out, and it’s the amount they think is fair.

...unless the service is really poor.
An astounding 90% of chefs said it’s fair to penalize bad waiters with a smaller tip.

Adjusting your tip for bad service is "astounding?" Why? Of course it's fair. That is the very reason tips are decided by the customer instead of wait staff pay being included in the price of the food, as it is for all other employees of the restaurant. You tip based on your opinion of the quality of the service. The only time I think we shouldn't deduct for bad service is if the errors weren't the server's fault. It's difficult to decide the origin of some issues, and if in doubt, I leave a full tip, provided the server apologized profusely for the problem. But good grief. Since when is anyone in any job entitled to a tip for bad service?

Friday Five: Fields

1. What is the field nearest your home like?
It's right behind my back picket fence. There's an area with about 2-foot high whispy grass for a little way back, and then the forest begins. There are a few trees in the field. Deer like to group there to eat in the morning.

2. How did you get into the professional field you’re in? If you’re not working, what field are you most likely to find yourself in some day?
I'm not in a professional field again yet. It's highly likely I will return to data management- database administration and/or data quality assurance- in a few years. Maybe in pharma again, or perhaps in another industry.

3. What’s the most interesting sight within your current field of vision?

Moe the hemit crab and the mountain she has built in the corner of her crabitat. Not sure why she's done that. That's her in the cave. Bright blue shell, red/blue legs.

4. Where were you the last time you fielded questions from several people in turn?
Probably not since a Mothers Club meeting about 15 years ago, taking questions about Moms' Night Out or Kids Field Trips for the month.

5. How are you feeling right now?
Pretty great! TGIF, y'all.
